Overview

Actos 15mg Tablet contains pioglitazone 15mg, a thiazolidinedione (insulin-sensitising) medicine used, alone or with other anti-diabetic medicines, to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pioglitazone works by activating a nuclear receptor (PPAR-gamma) mainly in fat and muscle tissue, which improves the body’s sensitivity to its own insulin, helping cells take up and use glucose more effectively rather than increasing insulin secretion.

How it Works

Pioglitazone activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma), altering the expression of genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. This reduces insulin resistance in fat, muscle, and liver tissue, lowering blood glucose without directly stimulating insulin release from the pancreas.

Directions for Use

Take Actos 15mg Tablet once daily, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. It may take several weeks to see the full blood-sugar-lowering effect, so continue taking it as prescribed even if you do not notice an immediate difference.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Actos 15mg Tablet is 15-30mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to a maximum of 45mg daily depending on your blood sugar response, either alone or combined with other diabetes medicines. Regular blood sugar monitoring guides dose adjustments.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Actos 15mg Tablet used for?

Actos 15mg Tablet is used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, either alone or together with other diabetes medicines, as directed by your doctor.

Why does this medicine sometimes cause swelling or weight gain?

Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention, which may lead to swelling of the legs/ankles and weight gain; this is why it is not suitable for people with heart failure and should be reported to your doctor.

Can this medicine cause bladder problems?

Pioglitazone has been associated with a possible increased risk of bladder cancer with long-term use, so tell your doctor immediately if you notice blood in your urine, urgency, or pain on urination.

How long does it take to see the blood-sugar-lowering effect?

It can take several weeks of regular use for pioglitazone’s full effect on blood sugar to become apparent, so continue taking it as prescribed even without an immediate noticeable change.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Actos 15mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
