Overview

Adalat LA 30mg Tablet contains nifedipine 30mg in an extended-release (long-acting) formulation, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart).

Nifedipine works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels, widening them and reducing resistance to blood flow. This lowers blood pressure and, in angina, improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle.

How it Works

Nifedipine blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium entry into these cells. This relaxes and widens (dilates) arteries, particularly the coronary and peripheral arteries, lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart, while the extended-release formulation releases the drug gradually to minimise sudden drops in blood pressure or reflex increases in heart rate.

Directions for Use

Swallow Adalat LA 30mg Tablet whole with a glass of water, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet. You may notice what looks like an intact tablet in your stool – this is just the empty shell after the medicine has been released and is not a cause for concern.

Dosage

The usual dose of Adalat LA 30mg Tablet is one tablet once daily, and your doctor may adjust it based on your blood pressure or angina control. The dose is individualised, and this extended-release tablet should not be crushed, split, or chewed as this would release the full dose too quickly.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice significantly increase nifedipine blood levels and should be avoided
  • Other blood pressure medicines (e.g. beta-blockers) may increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect and risk of low blood pressure
  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, certain macrolide antibiotics) can raise nifedipine levels and side effects
  • Rifampicin and other strong CYP3A4 inducers can reduce nifedipine’s effectiveness

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time every day, swallowing the tablet whole
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while on this medicine
  • Monitor your blood pressure and ankles for swelling, and report significant changes to your doctor
  • Do not stop this medicine abruptly without medical advice, especially if being treated for angina

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Adalat LA 30mg Tablet used for?

Adalat LA 30mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and angina. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why can’t I crush or chew this tablet?

This is an extended-release tablet designed to release nifedipine gradually over 24 hours. Crushing, chewing, or splitting it releases the full dose at once, which can cause a sudden, excessive drop in blood pressure.

Is it normal to see something like a tablet in my stool?

Yes, the outer shell of this extended-release tablet is designed not to fully dissolve, so you may see an empty shell in your stool after the medicine has been absorbed – this is expected and not a sign the medicine did not work.

Can I drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine?

No, grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided as they can significantly raise nifedipine levels in your blood, increasing the risk of side effects such as very low blood pressure.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Adalat LA 30mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
