Overview

Adalat LA 60mg Tablet contains nifedipine 60mg in an extended-release (long-acting) formulation, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic stable angina (exercise-related chest pain). The long-acting formulation provides smooth, once-daily blood pressure control.

Nifedipine works by blocking calcium channels in the smooth muscle walls of blood vessels, preventing calcium from entering these cells. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels (particularly arteries), lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart muscle.

How it Works

Nifedipine selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium influx and causing arterial vasodilation. The extended-release tablet shell releases the drug gradually over 24 hours, avoiding the sharp peaks and troughs, and the reflex fast heartbeat, seen with older short-acting nifedipine formulations.

Directions for Use

Take Adalat LA 60mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without a light meal. Swallow the tablet whole – do not crush, chew, or split it, as this destroys the extended-release mechanism and can cause the full dose to be released at once. You may occasionally notice what looks like an intact tablet shell in your stool; this is expected and does not mean the medicine was not absorbed.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Adalat LA 60mg Tablet is 30-60mg once daily, which your doctor may adjust up to a maximum of 90mg daily depending on your blood pressure or angina control. Dose changes should only be made by your doctor, usually no more often than every 7-14 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Adalat LA 60mg Tablet used for?

Adalat LA 60mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and chronic stable angina (chest pain triggered by exertion). Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why can’t I crush or split the tablet?

This tablet has a special shell designed to release nifedipine slowly over 24 hours. Crushing, chewing, or splitting it destroys this mechanism and can release the full dose at once, which may cause a sudden and excessive drop in blood pressure.

Is it normal to see something like a tablet shell in my stool?

Yes, the outer shell of the tablet is not fully absorbed and may appear intact in the stool after the medicine has been released – this is expected and does not mean you missed your dose.

Can I drink grapefruit juice with this medicine?

No, grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided completely, as they can significantly raise nifedipine levels in your blood and increase the risk of side effects such as very low blood pressure.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Adalat LA 60mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
