Ammeda Sterile Gamgee Pad (10cmx20cm) is a thick, cushioned dressing pad built from an absorbent cotton wool core wrapped in a non-woven gauze outer layer, sterilised and individually sealed in a single pack per unit. Each pad measures 10cm by 20cm, giving it a larger surface area than a standard gauze swab, and its layered construction gives it noticeably more bulk and cushioning than a flat dressing.

This type of pad — often called a Gamgee pad or Gamgee tissue — is a well-established dressing format that combines the softness of cotton wool with the structural integrity of a gauze cover, so the cotton fibres do not shed loose onto the wound surface the way plain cotton wool would. It is sold as a general medical consumable in Malaysia, is available without a prescription, and each individual pack maintains sterility until opened.

The pad’s cotton wool core is made up of fine, loosely packed cotton fibres that create a large internal surface area, allowing the material to absorb and hold a substantial volume of fluid through capillary action. The outer non-woven gauze layer wraps around this core, containing the loose fibres so they do not directly contact a wound surface, while still allowing fluid to pass through the gauze into the absorbent cotton beneath.

Because the outer layer is a smooth, non-woven fabric rather than an adhesive material, the pad does not stick to skin or wound tissue in the way an adhesive dressing would, and it is intended to be held in place with a separate bandage, tape, or retention dressing. The combination of a soft cushioned core and a fibre-containing outer wrap is the defining structural principle of this pad type.

Wash and dry your hands before handling the pad. Check that the individual pack is intact and check the expiry date before opening. Open the sterile pack carefully, handling the pad only by its outer edges and avoiding contact with the surface that will sit against the skin or wound.

Position the pad over the area as directed by a doctor, pharmacist, or the product instructions, and secure it in place using a separate bandage, retention tape, or dressing wrap, since the pad itself has no adhesive. Replace with a fresh pad at each scheduled dressing change, and dispose of the used pad after each single use — do not reuse a pad once it has been removed.
