Overview

Apo-Sumatriptan 50mg Tablet contains sumatriptan 50mg, a triptan (selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist) used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults.

During a migraine attack, blood vessels around the brain widen and inflammatory substances are released around nerve endings, contributing to the throbbing pain. Sumatriptan works by stimulating 5-HT1B/1D receptors, which narrows these blood vessels back to normal and blocks the release of inflammatory neuropeptides, relieving the migraine.

How it Works

Sumatriptan selectively activates 5-HT1B receptors on cranial blood vessels, causing them to constrict, and 5-HT1D receptors on trigeminal nerve endings, reducing the release of pain-signalling and inflammatory neuropeptides. Together these actions reverse the changes that cause migraine pain.

Directions for Use

Swallow Apo-Sumatriptan 50mg Tablet whole with water at the first sign of a migraine headache (it may be less effective if taken during the aura, before the headache begins). Do not take more than the maximum number of tablets in 24 hours advised by your doctor, and rest in a quiet, dark room if possible after taking it.

Dosage

The usual dose of Apo-Sumatriptan 50mg Tablet is one tablet taken as soon as possible after a migraine attack starts. If the migraine improves but returns, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours, up to the maximum daily dose your doctor has advised. This medicine is for treating an attack that has already started, not for preventing migraines.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Apo-Sumatriptan 50mg Tablet used for?

Apo-Sumatriptan 50mg Tablet is used to relieve the pain and symptoms of a migraine attack that has already started, including headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound.

How quickly does sumatriptan work?

Many people notice relief within 30 minutes to 2 hours after taking a dose, though individual response varies.

Can I take a second dose if my migraine comes back?

Yes, if your migraine improves and then returns, you may take a second dose after at least 2 hours from the first, up to the maximum daily dose your doctor has advised. Do not exceed this limit.

Can I use this medicine for a regular headache or every migraine I get?

Sumatriptan is intended for treating migraine attacks specifically, and using it too frequently can itself cause medication-overuse headache. Discuss your usage pattern with your doctor if you need it often.

Why can’t I take this with certain antidepressants or ergotamine?

Combining sumatriptan with MAOIs or ergotamine-type medicines can cause dangerous interactions such as serotonin syndrome or prolonged blood vessel narrowing. Always tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
