Overview

Arnica Comp Gel is a topical gel manufactured by DHU (Deutsche Homoopathie-Union), a German manufacturer of traditional and homeopathic preparations. It is formulated as a combination of natural plant-derived tinctures, including Arnica montana, Calendula officinalis, and Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), carried in a water-and-alcohol-based gel. It is sold in Malaysia as an Over-the-Counter (OTC) product and is supplied in a 50g tube.

As a multi-botanical “comp.” (compound) preparation, this gel differs from single-ingredient arnica gels in that it combines several traditionally used plant extracts in one formulation rather than arnica alone. It is classed within DoctorOnCall Malaysia’s self-care topical range, which sits alongside, but separately from, conventional single-active-ingredient pharmaceutical topical gels. The product is intended strictly for external application to the skin.

Arnica Comp Gel is packaged in a single 50g tube size in the Malaysian market. As with any topical herbal preparation, the full ingredient list, batch number, and expiry date are printed on the carton and tube, and customers are encouraged to read the printed product label in full and to speak with a DoctorOnCall pharmacist if they have any questions about the formulation before use.

Directions for Use

  • Clean and dry the area of skin where the gel will be applied.
  • Squeeze a small, pea-sized amount of gel onto clean fingertips.
  • Spread a thin layer over the external skin area and massage gently until it is absorbed.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after application, unless the hands themselves are the area being treated.
  • Close the tube cap tightly immediately after each use to keep the gel clean.

Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years, a thin layer of Arnica Comp Gel is typically applied to the affected external skin area 2 to 3 times a day, or as directed on the product packaging or by a DoctorOnCall pharmacist. Do not apply more frequently than stated on the label. This product is for external use only and should never be swallowed or applied to the eyes, mouth, nose, broken skin, or open wounds unless the printed label specifically permits it. If there is no change after several days of regular use, stop using the product and speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

Shelf Life

Use Arnica Comp Gel before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton. Once the tube has been opened, follow the in-use period stated on the packaging; if none is stated, it is good practice to use the gel within a few months of opening. Do not use the product if the gel’s colour, texture, or smell has visibly changed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the tube tightly capped between uses, and store it out of the reach and sight of children and pets.

Side Effects

  • Common: mild, temporary redness or a warm sensation at the site of application.
  • Common: itching or a light tingling feeling where the gel was applied.
  • Serious: an allergic skin reaction, such as a spreading rash, swelling, blistering, or worsening irritation, which requires you to stop use immediately and seek medical attention, as frequent or prolonged use of Arnica-containing products can increase the risk of developing a new sensitivity to Arnica over time.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to Arnica montana, Calendula officinalis, Hamamelis virginiana, or any other ingredient in this gel.
  • Known allergy to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family (for example daisies, chrysanthemums, or ragweed), because of possible cross-reactivity with Arnica.
  • Application to broken skin, open wounds, infected skin, or mucous membranes such as the eyes, mouth, or nose, unless the printed product label specifically states otherwise.
  • Oral/internal use under any circumstances – this product is for external skin application only.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug or food interactions have been established for Arnica Comp Gel when it is used externally as directed, since it is not intended to be absorbed into the bloodstream in meaningful amounts.
  • Avoid applying this gel to the same area of skin at the same time as other topical medicated creams, gels, or ointments, as layering products may increase the risk of local skin irritation.
  • Tell your pharmacist if you are already using another topical treatment on the same area of skin before starting this product.

Quick Tips

  • Do a small patch test on an unaffected area of skin before first use if you have sensitive skin or a history of allergies.
  • Apply only to clean, dry, intact skin.
  • Keep the gel away from your eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
  • Do not cover the application area with an airtight dressing unless a pharmacist or doctor advises it.
  • Close the tube cap tightly after every use to keep the gel free of contamination.
  • Check the expiry date printed on the pack before each use.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active components: a combination of natural plant-derived tinctures including Arnica montana, Calendula officinalis, and Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), prepared as a traditional/herbal topical combination rather than a single conventional pharmaceutical compound.
  • Gel base (non-active): purified water, glycerol, isopropyl alcohol, a carbomer gelling agent, a polyethylene glycol-based emulsifier, and a small amount of ammonia solution used to form the gel consistency.
  • Manufactured by DHU (Deutsche Homoopathie-Union), Germany.
  • Supplied as a 50g tube for the Malaysian market.

Relevant Information

Precautions: This product is formulated from natural plant-derived tinctures and is intended for external use on clean, intact skin only. People with known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family should take extra care, as cross-reactivity with Arnica montana is possible. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding women and in young children should only take place after checking with a pharmacist or doctor, as safety data for these groups is limited.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using Arnica Comp Gel and seek medical advice if you notice a skin rash, blistering, significant swelling, or any other sign of an allergic reaction. Speak with a pharmacist if you are unsure whether this product is suitable for the area of skin you wish to apply it to, or if you are already using other topical products on the same area.
