Overview

Atehexal 50mg Tablet contains atenolol 50mg, a beta-1 selective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), angina (chest pain), and certain irregular heart rhythms. It is also used to improve survival after a heart attack.

Atenolol works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors mainly found in the heart, which slows the heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart’s oxygen demand.

How it Works

Atenolol selectively blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing the stimulating effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline. This slows the heart rate, decreases cardiac output, and lowers blood pressure, while also reducing the oxygen demand of the heart muscle, which helps relieve angina.

Directions for Use

Take Atehexal 50mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel well, as abruptly stopping a beta-blocker can worsen angina or trigger a heart problem.

Dosage

The usual dose of Atehexal 50mg Tablet for hypertension and angina is 50-100mg once daily, adjusted by your doctor based on your blood pressure and heart rate response. Dosing after a heart attack follows a specific protocol determined by your doctor. Always take exactly as prescribed.

Shelf Life

  • Clonidine withdrawal while on atenolol may cause a dangerous rebound rise in blood pressure
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medicines – atenolol may mask signs of low blood sugar such as a fast heartbeat
  • NSAIDs may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of atenolol

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time each day to build a consistent routine
  • Do not stop this medicine abruptly – your doctor will taper the dose if it needs to be stopped

Atehexal 50mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure, angina, certain irregular heart rhythms, and to improve survival after a heart attack. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why should I not stop this medicine suddenly?

Suddenly stopping a beta-blocker like atenolol can worsen angina or trigger a heart problem. If treatment needs to stop, your doctor will reduce the dose gradually over time.

Will this medicine make my heart beat too slowly?

Atenolol is designed to slow the heart rate, but an excessively slow or irregular heartbeat, especially with dizziness or fainting, should be reported to your doctor promptly.

Can I take this medicine if I have asthma?
