Axcel Urea Cream

Axcel Urea Cream is a topical cream for external use on the skin, manufactured in Malaysia by Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn Bhd under the Axcel brand. Its active ingredient is urea at a strength of 10% w/w, and the cream is formulated as a white, water-miscible base that spreads easily and is absorbed without leaving a heavy, greasy film. Chlorocresol at 0.1% w/w is included in the formulation as a preservative.

Urea, also known as carbamide, is a naturally occurring compound that is also found in the outer layer of human skin as part of its natural moisturising factors. In topical products it is classified as an emollient and keratolytic agent, and its strength determines how it behaves: at lower concentrations such as 10%, it is generally regarded as a hydrating ingredient because of its ability to attract and hold water in the outer skin layer. This makes the cream an option that pharmacists often discuss with customers who have a question about urea-containing skin products.

It is an over-the-counter product, which means it can be bought from pharmacies without a prescription, and the product is registered for sale in both Malaysia and Singapore. For external use on the skin only. Wash and gently dry your hands and the area of skin to be treated, then squeeze out a small amount of cream and spread a thin, even layer over the area. Massage gently until the cream has been absorbed. Follow the frequency shown on the packaging or leaflet, or as directed by your pharmacist or doctor, and do not apply more often than advised.

Wash your hands after application unless the hands are the area being treated. Avoid the eyes, lips, inside of the nose, and other mucous membranes, and do not apply to open wounds, cracked skin that is bleeding, or infected areas. Replace the cap tightly after each use, and do not share the tube with other people.

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as directed on the packaging or leaflet, or as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. The amount needed depends on the size of the skin area, and only enough cream to cover the area with a thin film is required; a larger amount does not increase effectiveness and may increase stinging or irritation. A specific maximum daily amount is not stated in the sources reviewed, so please follow the product label and pharmacist advice.

If you miss an application, apply it when you remember, but do not apply a double amount. Stop using the cream and see a doctor or pharmacist if irritation, redness, or a rash develops, or if your skin condition does not improve, worsens, or keeps returning.

• Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, following the storage instructions printed on the packaging. Keep the tube tightly closed after each use and keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
• Do not freeze the cream and do not leave the tube in a hot car or near a heat source. Do not transfer the cream to another container.

• Common: Mild stinging, burning, or tingling on application, especially on dry, cracked, or freshly shaved skin.
• Common: Redness, itching, or mild skin irritation at the application site.
• Common: Temporary dryness or a feeling of tightness if the cream is applied to skin that is already inflamed.
• Serious: Allergic skin reaction such as a spreading rash, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, which needs urgent medical attention because it can progress to breathing difficulty.
• Serious: Severe pain, blistering, or oozing at the application site, which may indicate a strong irritant or allergic reaction and requires the cream to be stopped and medical advice sought.

• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to urea, chlorocresol, or any other ingredient in this cream.
• Application to open wounds, bleeding cracks, or skin that is visibly infected.
• Application to the eyes, lips, inside the nose or mouth, or other mucous membranes.

• No significant drug interactions are known for Axcel Urea Cream when it is used on intact skin as directed.
• Urea can increase the skin penetration of other topical medicines applied to the same area, so speak to a pharmacist or doctor before layering it with prescription creams, ointments, or steroid products.
• Using it together with other exfoliating or keratolytic products, such as salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, or retinoids, on the same area may increase the risk of stinging and irritation.
• No food interactions are known, as this cream is applied to the skin only and must not be swallowed.

• Apply a thin layer only; using more cream does not make it absorb faster and can leave the skin feeling sticky.
• Try a small test patch first if you have sensitive skin, and watch for redness or stinging over the next several hours.
• Avoid applying it to cracked or broken skin, as urea can sting when it reaches raw areas.
• Wash your hands before and after applying the cream, and keep the cap tightly closed to prevent contamination.
• Do not layer it with strong exfoliating products or actives unless your pharmacist has said the combination is suitable.
• Keep the 20g tube out of the reach of children and away from direct sunlight.

Precautions: Axcel Urea Cream is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and do not apply it to open, bleeding, or infected skin. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are applying it on a child or infant, or if you have very sensitive skin, eczema, or another chronic skin condition. Because urea can increase the absorption of other topical products, tell your pharmacist about any other creams, ointments, or skin treatments you are using on the same area.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using the cream and seek advice if you develop a rash, persistent redness, swelling, blistering, or severe stinging, or if you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Please also see a doctor if your skin condition does not improve, worsens, becomes infected with signs such as pus, warmth, or increasing pain, or keeps returning after you stop using the cream.
