Overview

Betadine Dry Powder Spray is supplied as a powder, with Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) 2.5% w/w. It is supplied in a pack size of 55g.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

Shake the canister well before each use. Hold the canister upright at a distance of approximately 15 cm to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) from the area to be treated. Press the nozzle to release a short burst of spray, moving the canister across the area so the powder settles evenly. Allow the powder layer to air-dry before covering the area with a dressing, bandage or clothing, if required. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid inhaling the spray mist, and do not spray directly onto the face; if application near the face is required, spray onto a clean gauze or cloth first and apply from there.

Dosage

As a topical antiseptic, this product is applied directly to the intended skin area rather than taken according to a fixed oral or systemic dose. The general application amount is a short spray burst repeated across the area until a thin, even, visible layer of powder is formed, applied 1 to 3 times a day or as directed on the product packaging or by a pharmacist.

Shelf Life

The manufacturer’s stated expiry date is printed on the canister and outer carton. No separate unopened shelf-life duration beyond this printed date has been independently verified for this dry powder spray format, so the expiry date on the packaging should always be checked before use.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and open flames, as the contents are held under pressure in an aerosol canister. Keep the cap on when the product is not in use, and store out of reach of children. Do not puncture, crush or incinerate the canister, and avoid exposing it to temperatures above 50°C, even once the contents have been used up.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, transient stinging or a warm sensation at the site of application.
  • Common: Temporary brown or orange discolouration of the skin at the application site, which fades as the powder wears off or is washed away.
  • Serious: Contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling or blistering at the application site, which warrant stopping use and seeking medical advice.
  • Serious: Symptoms suggestive of iodine absorption affecting thyroid function (for example, unusual tiredness, unexplained weight change, or neck swelling) with prolonged or extensive use, particularly in people with existing thyroid disorders.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to povidone-iodine, iodine, or any other component of the product.
  • Individuals with hyperthyroidism, other active thyroid disorders, or a history of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, unless specifically advised otherwise by a doctor.
  • Neonates and infants under 2 years of age, owing to the potential for greater iodine absorption through immature skin.
  • Individuals on lithium therapy, or those scheduled for radioiodine thyroid investigations or treatment, unless a doctor has advised otherwise.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Concurrent application with other topical antiseptics or strong oxidising agents (such as hydrogen peroxide) on the same area is not recommended, as they may chemically interact and reduce each other’s antimicrobial activity.
  • People on long-term lithium therapy, or those undergoing radioiodine-related investigations or treatment, should seek medical advice before regular or extensive use, due to potential effects on iodine-related thyroid monitoring.
  • No clinically significant food interactions are known for topical povidone-iodine use.

Quick Tips

  • Do a small test application first if you have not used an iodine-based antiseptic before.
  • Shake the canister before every use so the powder disperses evenly.
  • Let the sprayed area air-dry fully before covering it, so the powder layer stays intact.
  • Wipe the nozzle clean after each use to prevent it from becoming blocked.
  • Avoid spraying near the eyes, inside the ears, or directly onto mucous membranes.
  • Check the expiry date printed on the canister before each use and discard the product once expired.

How long will delivery take?

Within Malaysia, standard delivery takes 3 to 5 working days. Same-day delivery is available in the Klang Valley for orders placed before 12pm; orders placed after 12pm arrive by the end of the next day.

Orders to Singapore are sent as international deliveries and take 5 to 9 working days. A lump-sum shipping and handling fee applies to every overseas delivery and is shown at checkout.

What payment methods can I use?

Customers in Malaysia can pay by FPX online banking, credit or debit card (Visa and Mastercard), and supported e-wallets including Touch ‘n Go eWallet, GrabPay and ShopeePay.

FPX and local e-wallets are tied to Malaysian bank and wallet accounts, so if your delivery address is in Singapore, use the payment options displayed at checkout for that address rather than assuming the same list applies.

Can Betadine Dry Powder Spray be delivered to Singapore?

Yes. DoctorOnCall ships to Singapore as an international order dispatched from Malaysia, arriving in 5 to 9 working days with a lump-sum shipping and handling fee.

Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) allows personal imports of up to three months’ supply of a medicine for your own use or an immediate family member’s, as long as it contains no controlled drugs, psychotropic substances or prohibited items. Keep the product in its original labelled packaging and keep a copy of your prescription or doctor’s letter with it. Quantities above three months’ supply, and medicines containing controlled substances, require prior HSA approval.

Is Betadine Dry Powder Spray registered with the authorities?

Products listed on DoctorOnCall are registered with Malaysia’s Ministry of Health for supply in Malaysia, and each pack carries its MAL registration number.

An order delivered to Singapore arrives as a personal import of a Malaysia-registered product; HSA product registration is not required for personal-use quantities, but it is also not the same as a product registered for sale in Singapore. If you need a locally registered Singapore product, buy it from a pharmacy in Singapore.

Who do I contact if there is a problem with my order?

DoctorOnCall’s customer care team handles order, delivery and product queries through the contact channels on the site, including WhatsApp and the online help centre.

For deliveries to Singapore, allow more time before chasing an order than you would for a local Malaysian delivery, as the parcel passes through customs clearance and tracking updates can appear later in the journey.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use with caution on large open wounds, deep puncture wounds, or serious burns, where iodine absorption may be higher; a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted first in these situations. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding women should be limited and only on medical advice, since absorbed iodine can cross the placenta and pass into breast milk. Avoid applying over large areas of skin in young children. This product is not a substitute for proper wound cleaning or professional wound care where that is indicated.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical or pharmacist advice if the treated area shows worsening redness, swelling, warmth, pus or fever, if a rash or blistering develops after application, if the product is needed for more than 7 days on the same area, or if you have a known thyroid condition and are considering regular or extensive use.
