Overview

Bio-Quinone Q10 Gold 100mg Capsule from Pharma Nord is a coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) dietary supplement. Each capsule provides 100mg of coenzyme Q10 in the ubiquinone form, and the pack available on DoctorOnCall contains 60 capsules, which is a two-month supply at one capsule a day. It is suited to adults who wish to add a measured daily amount of coenzyme Q10 to their routine.

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound made naturally by the body and found in small amounts in foods such as meat, fish and nuts. It is concentrated in the mitochondria, where it takes part in the chain of reactions that cells use to produce energy, and it also acts as an antioxidant within cell membranes. The body’s own production of coenzyme Q10 tends to decline with age, and some medicines, such as statins, can lower blood levels of it.

In Bio-Quinone Q10 Gold, the coenzyme Q10 is dissolved in vegetable oil and enclosed in a soft gelatin capsule, a format designed for a fat-soluble nutrient that is best absorbed alongside dietary fat. At 100mg per capsule, it is a higher-strength option than 30mg or 60mg products, so a single daily capsule is usually enough. As with any supplement, it is intended to complement a balanced diet and does not replace medicines prescribed by your doctor.

Directions for Use

Swallow one capsule whole with a glass of water during or straight after a meal, ideally one that contains some fat, to support absorption of the coenzyme Q10. Do not chew or open the capsule. Take it at around the same time each day; if you notice difficulty sleeping, take it with breakfast or lunch rather than in the evening.

Dosage

Adults: 1 capsule (100mg coenzyme Q10) once daily with a meal, or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake stated on the label unless a healthcare professional has advised otherwise. If you miss a capsule, simply take the next one at the usual time – do not take two capsules to make up for a missed one. Not intended for children unless advised by a doctor.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture, and keep the container or blister pack tightly closed after each use. Do not store in the bathroom or in a hot car. Keep out of reach and sight of children, and follow any specific storage instructions shown on the product label.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild digestive discomfort such as nausea, upset stomach, heartburn, loss of appetite or diarrhoea; taking the capsule with a meal may help.
  • Common: Headache or dizziness in some people, usually mild and temporary.
  • Less common: Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) has been reported with coenzyme Q10; if this happens, taking the capsule earlier in the day may help.
  • Serious: Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing are rare – stop taking the product and seek urgent medical attention.
  • Serious: Unusual bruising or bleeding, or a change in blood test results (INR) in people taking warfarin – contact your doctor promptly.

Contraindications

  • Do not take if you are allergic to coenzyme Q10 or to any other ingredient in the capsule, including gelatin and the vegetable oil used in the capsule (check the label for the oil source if you have a soya allergy).
  • Not recommended for children unless advised by a doctor, as the product is formulated for adults.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor, because safety data in these groups are limited.
  • People taking warfarin or other blood-thinning medicines should not start this product without first speaking to their doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Warfarin: Coenzyme Q10 may interact with warfarin and has been reported to reduce its blood-thinning effect; your doctor may need to monitor your INR more closely if you start or stop this product.
  • Blood pressure medicines (antihypertensives): Coenzyme Q10 may add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect of these medicines; monitor your blood pressure and tell your doctor if you feel light-headed or dizzy.
  • Insulin and other diabetes medicines: Coenzyme Q10 may interact with insulin and could affect blood glucose levels; check your blood sugar regularly and speak to your doctor before starting.
  • Chemotherapy: Antioxidant supplements such as coenzyme Q10 may not be compatible with some cancer treatments; always consult your oncologist before taking this product during chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Food: Coenzyme Q10 is fat-soluble, so it is best absorbed when taken with a meal that contains some fat.
  • Other supplements: Check the labels of multivitamins and other products you take to avoid duplicating coenzyme Q10 intake.

Quick Tips

  • Take your daily capsule with your main meal – coenzyme Q10 is fat-soluble and is absorbed better with food.
  • One 60-capsule pack lasts about two months at one capsule a day, so plan your next order before it runs out.
  • Check whether your multivitamin or other supplements already contain coenzyme Q10 to avoid doubling up.
  • If you take warfarin, blood pressure or diabetes medicines, tell your doctor before starting so they can monitor you.
  • Keep a list of all supplements you take and show it to your doctor or pharmacist at each visit.
  • Store the pack away from heat and humidity, for example in a bedroom drawer rather than the kitchen or bathroom.
