Overview

Bioflor 250mg Sachets contain Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745, a freeze-dried, non-pathogenic probiotic yeast, at 250mg per sachet. Saccharomyces boulardii was originally isolated from lychee fruit and is one of the best studied yeast probiotics in clinical practice. Unlike bacterial probiotics, it is a yeast, so it is not affected by common antibacterial medicines.

Each sachet holds a fine powder that is mixed into water or another suitable cold or lukewarm drink, or stirred into soft food, before swallowing. The powder format is flexible for people who find capsules difficult to swallow and for young children, whose dose is given by sachet rather than capsule. The formulation may contain lactose and fructose, which should be noted by people with sugar intolerances.

Bioflor 250mg Sachets are sold over the counter and can be ordered through DoctorOnCall for delivery in Malaysia and Singapore. The sachets are individually packed, making them easy to carry when travelling. Customers should read the product leaflet, check the ingredient list and speak to a pharmacist before use if they are unwell, immunocompromised or taking other medicines.

Directions for Use

Take exactly as directed on the pack or as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

  1. Open the sachet and pour the powder into a glass containing a small amount of water, juice or milk, or mix it into soft food or a baby bottle.
  2. Stir well and drink straight away.
  3. Do not mix with very hot, iced or alcoholic drinks, or with very hot food, as this can reduce the activity of the live yeast.
  4. Sachets can be taken with or without meals.

Do not use in people with a central venous catheter, and avoid preparing the dose in the same room as a patient with a central line in hospital settings.

Dosage

Adults and children over 2 years: The usual dose is 1 to 2 sachets (250mg to 500mg) per day, divided into one or two doses, unless your doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise.

Children under 2 years: Only on the advice of a doctor.

Missed dose: Skip it and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.

Maximum: do not exceed the dose stated on the pack. See a doctor if diarrhoea continues beyond 2 days, or is accompanied by fever, blood in stools, severe vomiting or signs of dehydration.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the packaging. Do not use sachets that are damaged or past the expiry date.

Storage Instructions

Store unopened sachets according to the storage instructions printed on the pack, in a dry place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children. Once a sachet is opened, use it immediately.

Side Effects

  • Common: Bloating, flatulence (wind) or mild abdominal discomfort.
  • Common: Constipation in some people.
  • Common: Increased thirst.
  • Serious: Fungaemia (yeast entering the bloodstream), reported mainly in critically ill people or those with a central venous catheter, which causes fever and requires urgent care.
  • Serious: Allergic reactions such as itching, rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, which need emergency medical help.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Saccharomyces boulardii, to yeast, or to any ingredient in the formulation.
  • People with a central venous catheter in place.
  • Critically ill or seriously immunocompromised people, because of the risk of yeast entering the bloodstream.
  • Hereditary fructose intolerance, where the sachet formulation contains fructose.
  • Known allergy to yeast products.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Oral antifungal medicines may reduce the activity of the live yeast, so do not take them together without medical advice.
  • Do not take with alcohol, as alcohol can kill the live yeast and reduce its activity.
  • Antibacterial medicines do not affect the yeast, but tell your pharmacist about all medicines you take.
  • Avoid mixing with very hot or iced drinks and foods, as temperature extremes may inactivate the yeast.
  • People on immunosuppressive medicines should ask their doctor before use.

Quick Tips

  • Stir the powder into a lukewarm or cool, not boiling, drink.
  • Drink the mixture straight away rather than leaving it to stand.
  • Take at roughly the same times each day to keep a regular routine.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, as dehydration needs attention in its own right.
  • Do not open a sachet until you are ready to take it.
  • Tell the pharmacist if you or a family member has a central line or weakened immunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient in Bioflor 250mg Sachets?

Who should not take Bioflor sachets?

People who are allergic to Saccharomyces boulardii or yeast, those with a central venous catheter, and critically ill or seriously immunocompromised people should not take it. Anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance should also avoid the sachet formulation. Please speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Are there any side effects of Bioflor sachets?

Can I take Bioflor sachets with antibiotics or antifungal medicines?

Because it is a yeast, Bioflor is not affected by antibacterial medicines, but oral antifungal medicines can reduce its activity and should not be combined without advice. Always tell your pharmacist about every medicine you are taking.

How should I prepare and store Bioflor sachets?

Can children and pregnant or breastfeeding women take Bioflor sachets?
