Overview

Bonviva 150mg Tablet contains ibandronic acid 150mg, a once-monthly oral bisphosphonate used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, reducing the risk of spinal (vertebral) fractures. It works by slowing down bone loss so that bone density can be maintained or improved over time.

Ibandronic acid binds to bone surfaces and is taken up by osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down old bone. It interferes with their activity, slowing the rate of bone breakdown so that bone-building cells can keep pace, gradually increasing bone mineral density.

How it Works

As a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, ibandronic acid concentrates in areas of active bone remodelling and inhibits an enzyme pathway (farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase) inside osteoclasts, reducing their ability to resorb bone. This shifts the balance of bone turnover towards net bone formation, strengthening bone over months of regular use.

Directions for Use

Take Bonviva 150mg Tablet first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 6 hours after your last food or drink, swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water only (not mineral water, coffee, tea, or juice). After taking it, remain fully upright – sitting or standing, never lying down – for at least 60 minutes, and do not eat, drink anything other than plain water, or take any other oral medicines during this time.

Dosage

Bonviva 150mg Tablet is taken as a single tablet once a month, on the same date each month, as directed by your doctor. It must never be taken more frequently than prescribed, and if a dose is missed it should be taken the next morning after you remember, then the monthly schedule adjusted accordingly – your doctor or pharmacist can advise on the correct rescheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bonviva 150mg Tablet used for?

Bonviva 150mg Tablet is used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, reducing the risk of spinal fractures by slowing bone loss.

Why must I take this medicine exactly as directed, with only plain water?

Ibandronic acid is very poorly absorbed, and food, other beverages, and many minerals bind to it in the stomach and block absorption almost completely – taking it any other way makes it far less effective.

Why do I need to stay upright for 60 minutes after taking it?

Bisphosphonate tablets can irritate the oesophagus if they stay in contact with it too long. Remaining upright helps the tablet pass quickly into the stomach and reduces the risk of heartburn or oesophageal injury.

What should I do if I forget to take my monthly dose?

If it is less than 7 days until your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait for your next scheduled date. Otherwise, take it the morning after you remember, then resume your original monthly schedule.

Do I need to tell my dentist I am taking this medicine?

Yes. Bisphosphonates carry a rare risk of a jaw bone-healing problem (osteonecrosis of the jaw), so tell your dentist before any extraction, implant, or invasive dental procedure.
