Overview

Carzepin 200mg Tablet contains Carbamazepine 200mg and is available as a tablet. It is classified as a prescription medicine and may only be obtained with a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

Only product, safety and handling information is published here. Anything beyond that is explained to you directly by your doctor or pharmacist as part of your consultation.

DoctorOnCall is a licensed online pharmacy. Orders for Carzepin 200mg Tablet are processed only after a doctor has assessed your suitability and issued a prescription, and every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is sent out.

Directions for Use

Take Carzepin 200mg Tablet with food to reduce stomach upset, at evenly spaced times each day as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not switch between different brands of carbamazepine without your doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice, as differences in formulation can affect blood levels of this narrow-therapeutic-index medicine.

Dosage

The dose of Carzepin 200mg Tablet is individualised by your doctor and usually started low, for example 100-200mg once or twice daily, then increased gradually to a maintenance dose based on your response and blood level monitoring. Because carbamazepine has a narrow therapeutic index, do not adjust your dose without your doctor’s advice, and attend all scheduled blood tests, as levels that are too low or too high can both cause problems.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Skin rash or allergic reactions
  • Swelling of face or lips (seek medical attention)
  • Low sodium levels (may cause confusion or seizures)
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Coordination problems

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or tricyclic antidepressants
  • History of bone marrow depression or blood disorders
  • Atrioventricular (AV) heart block without a pacemaker
  • Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Acute porphyria

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Hormonal contraceptives may become less effective, as carbamazepine speeds up their breakdown – discuss alternative or additional contraception with your doctor
  • Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be reduced, requiring closer INR monitoring
  • Other antiepileptic medicines (e.g. phenytoin, valproate) can interact in complex ways affecting either drug’s blood level
  • Grapefruit juice can increase carbamazepine blood levels and should be avoided

Quick Tips

  • Never switch brands of carbamazepine without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first, as this is a narrow-therapeutic-index medicine
  • Attend all scheduled blood tests to monitor carbamazepine levels, blood counts, and liver function
  • Report any new skin rash immediately and stop the medicine until you have spoken to your doctor
  • Do not stop this medicine suddenly, as this can trigger seizures – any changes must be made gradually under medical supervision
