Colodium 2mg Capsule

Colodium 2mg Capsule contains loperamide hydrochloride 2mg, an anti-diarrhoeal medicine used to provide symptomatic relief from acute diarrhoea, including travellers’ diarrhoea, by slowing down bowel movement and reducing the frequency of loose, watery stools. It also helps reduce associated cramping and urgency, allowing the digestive system to settle.

This product is available as a non-prescription (over-the-counter) medicine through DoctorOnCall in Malaysia, making it a convenient option for adults experiencing short-term, uncomplicated diarrhoea, although it is not intended for prolonged use, for diarrhoea with fever or blood in the stool, or for young children without medical advice.

Loperamide acts on opioid receptors in the wall of the intestine, slowing down the movement of the gut (peristalsis) and increasing the time it takes for stool to pass through the bowel. This allows more water to be reabsorbed from the stool, resulting in firmer, less frequent bowel movements, while also helping to reduce the sense of urgency and cramping that often accompanies diarrhoea.

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. For acute diarrhoea, an initial dose is usually taken first, followed by a further capsule after each loose stool, without exceeding the maximum daily dose stated on the packaging. Fluids and oral rehydration should also be taken to replace lost water and salts, especially if diarrhoea is frequent.

The usual adult dose for acute diarrhoea is 2mg (one capsule) taken initially, followed by 2mg after each subsequent loose stool, up to the maximum daily dose stated on the packaging, and treatment should not usually continue beyond 2 days without medical advice. This product is generally not recommended for children below the age stated on the packaging without a doctor’s guidance.

Do not use after the expiry date printed on the blister strip or carton. Store capsules in their original packaging until ready to use, and discard any capsules that are damaged or past their expiry date.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep the capsules in their original blister packaging until use. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to loperamide
• Acute bloody diarrhoea or diarrhoea with high fever
• Suspected bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella, or Campylobacter
• Acute ulcerative colitis
• Pseudomembranous colitis associated with antibiotic use
• Children below the age stated on the packaging without medical advice

• Caution when combined with other medicines that slow gut movement, as this may increase the risk of constipation or bowel obstruction
• Certain medicines that affect heart rhythm may interact with loperamide, particularly at higher than recommended doses
• Alcohol may increase drowsiness or dizziness
• Should not be relied upon if diarrhoea is caused by an infection requiring antibiotic treatment, as it may mask or prolong the underlying illness

Loperamide provides symptomatic relief from diarrhoea but does not treat its underlying cause, so persistent, severe, or bloody diarrhoea, or diarrhoea accompanied by high fever or signs of dehydration, should be assessed by a doctor rather than managed with this medicine alone. Maintaining adequate fluid and salt intake remains important throughout an episode of diarrhoea.
