Lomide 2mg Capsule

Lomide 2mg Capsule contains loperamide, an anti-diarrhoeal medicine that slows down gut movement (motility) to help control acute, short-term diarrhoea, including travellers’ diarrhoea. By slowing the passage of gut contents, it allows more time for water to be reabsorbed from the stool, making bowel motions firmer and less frequent.

Each capsule contains 2mg of loperamide. Lomide is intended for short-term use for straightforward diarrhoea and works alongside — not instead of — adequate fluid and salt replacement (oral rehydration). It is not suitable for all types of diarrhoea, particularly when there are warning signs of a more serious bowel infection.

Loperamide acts on opioid receptors in the wall of the gut to slow down intestinal muscle contractions (peristalsis). This increases the time gut contents remain in the bowel, allowing more fluid to be reabsorbed and reducing the frequency and looseness of stools. At normal recommended doses, loperamide has minimal effect on the brain because very little of it crosses into the central nervous system.

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Lomide 2mg is usually taken at the start of an episode of diarrhoea, with further doses after each subsequent loose stool, up to the maximum daily amount stated on the label. Continue to drink plenty of fluids, ideally with an oral rehydration solution, while symptoms last.

For adults, a common regimen is two capsules (4mg) taken at the onset of diarrhoea, followed by one capsule (2mg) after each loose stool, without exceeding the maximum daily dose stated on the packaging. Do not use for more than 48 hours without medical advice, and stop immediately if diarrhoea is accompanied by blood, mucus, or a high fever. Not recommended for children without medical advice.

Lomide 2mg Capsule is typically stable for up to 36 months from the date of manufacture when unopened and stored correctly. Check the expiry date on the packaging before use.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep in the original packaging, out of the reach and sight of children.

• Constipation
• Abdominal cramping or bloating
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Tiredness or drowsiness
• Skin rash (uncommon)
• Bowel blockage (paralytic ileus) with overuse or in susceptible individuals (rare)

• Do not use if diarrhoea is bloody or accompanied by a high fever, as this may indicate a bacterial infection (such as dysentery) that loperamide can make worse
• Not recommended for young children without medical advice
• Avoid in acute flare-ups of ulcerative colitis or other inflammatory bowel disease unless directed by a doctor
• Known hypersensitivity to loperamide
• Use with caution in patients with liver impairment

• Caution when combined with other medicines that slow the central nervous system, as effects may add up
• Medicines such as quinidine and ritonavir can raise loperamide levels in the blood, increasing the risk of side effects
• Avoid alcohol, which can worsen dizziness and dehydration during a diarrhoeal illness
• Continue oral rehydration fluids alongside loperamide — it treats the symptom of loose stools, not fluid loss

• Drink plenty of fluids or an oral rehydration solution to replace lost water and salts
• Stop taking Lomide and seek medical care if diarrhoea persists beyond 48 hours, or if it worsens
• Seek medical care promptly if you notice blood in the stool, high fever, or severe abdominal pain
• Do not give to young children without first seeking medical advice
• Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy

Loperamide relieves the symptom of loose, frequent stools but does not treat the underlying cause of diarrhoea, so persistent or recurring diarrhoea should be properly assessed by a doctor. Never exceed the labelled maximum dose, as doing so has been linked to serious heart rhythm problems; if diarrhoea is severe, bloody, associated with high fever, or lasts beyond 48 hours, stop self-treatment and seek medical attention.
