Overview

Confident Aquadine Oral Spray is a portable mouth spray from the Confident oral-care range whose stated active ingredient is povidone-iodine. Povidone-iodine is an iodophor, a complex of iodine with the carrier polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone, and it has been used as an antiseptic in medical and household settings for many decades. The spray is formulated with purified water, glycerin, and flavouring agents, and it is packed in a small spray bottle that fits easily into a bag or pocket.

This product is sold over the counter as an oral antiseptic spray rather than a prescription medicine, and it is applied directly inside the mouth with a metered spray nozzle. Because the active ingredient is an iodine complex, the spray can leave a mild iodine taste and may temporarily stain the teeth or tongue, effects that are generally reversible. The delivery format is designed for quick, targeted application, which is different from a mouthwash that is swirled and spat out.

As with other iodine-containing products, people with thyroid conditions, a known iodine sensitivity, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a doctor or pharmacist before using it. The strength of povidone-iodine is stated on the product label, so please check the pack you receive for the exact concentration and any additional instructions from the manufacturer. Iodine-containing products are generally intended for short-term use unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before use. Aim the spray nozzle towards the inside of the mouth and spray directly onto the area of application. Avoid swallowing immediately after spraying so that the spray stays in contact with the area for a little longer, and do not swallow large amounts. Wipe the nozzle clean after use and replace the cap.

Dosage

Spray 2 to 3 times into the mouth, up to 3 times a day, or as directed by a healthcare professional or the product label. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and do not use continuously for a prolonged period without medical advice, as iodine can be absorbed through the lining of the mouth.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap replaced after use. Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: A mild tingling sensation or slight dryness in the mouth.
  • Common: A temporary iodine taste, or temporary brown staining of the teeth or tongue.
  • Common: Mild irritation or sensitivity of the mouth or throat.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction to iodine, such as swelling of the lips, face, or throat, rash, or difficulty breathing, or symptoms of an overactive thyroid with prolonged use, all of which need prompt medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if allergic to iodine, povidone-iodine, or any other ingredient in the spray.
  • Do not use if you have a thyroid disorder, or are receiving radioactive iodine therapy, unless advised by a doctor.
  • Consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as iodine can pass to the baby.
  • Not recommended for young children or infants without medical advice.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Lithium — regular or prolonged use of iodine-containing products may add to the effects of lithium on the thyroid; check with a doctor if you take lithium.
  • Other antiseptic or oral-care products used at the same time — check with a pharmacist before combining, as some can reduce the effect of povidone-iodine.
  • Iodine may interfere with certain thyroid function tests; tell your doctor if you use iodine-containing products regularly.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before each use for an even spray.
  • Aim the nozzle towards the inside of the mouth and avoid swallowing immediately after spraying.
  • Do not use the spray for longer than advised without checking with a doctor or pharmacist.

  • Keep the spray away from the eyes and rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
  • Wipe the nozzle after use and keep the bottle out of reach of children.
