Overview

Enerlyte Natural Oral Rehydration Salts is an oral rehydration salt (ORS) sachet product manufactured by Duopharma, a Malaysian pharmaceutical company. Each sachet contains a formulated blend of Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, and Glucose, mixed to the World Health Organization’s reduced-osmolarity standard for oral rehydration solution.

Enerlyte is registered and sold in Malaysia as an over-the-counter (OTC) product, and does not require a doctor’s prescription to purchase. It is listed on the Ministry of Health’s Malaysia Medicines Price Guide (MyPriMe), consistent with its status as a widely available, pharmacy-shelf ORS product rather than a controlled or prescription-only medicine.

The ‘Natural’ variant in this range is formulated without artificial flavouring, distinguishing it from flavoured ORS variants sold under the same brand. Enerlyte is supplied in single-serve sachets, each intended to be mixed with a set volume of drinking water immediately before use, and is sold in Malaysia in packs of multiple sachets.

Directions for Use

  • Tear open one sachet and empty the full contents into a clean cup.
  • Add 200 ml of cool, previously boiled or otherwise safe drinking water.
  • Stir thoroughly until the powder is completely dissolved.
  • Drink the prepared solution immediately, taking small, frequent sips rather than large gulps.
  • Discard any prepared solution that has not been consumed within 24 hours, and prepare a fresh sachet for the next dose.

Dosage

Adults and children over 12 years: mix one sachet with 200 ml of drinking water and sip the solution slowly after each loose or watery stool, or as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Younger children should be given smaller, more frequent sips of the prepared solution under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist, since the volume needed varies with the child’s age, weight, and degree of fluid loss.

If a dose is missed, prepare and take the next dose as soon as you remember; do not double up the concentration of a single sachet in an attempt to catch up. If diarrhoea, vomiting, or reduced urination continue for more than 24-48 hours despite regular use, or if there are signs of significant dehydration (such as sunken eyes, lethargy, or a dry mouth), stop self-treating and seek medical attention promptly.

Storage Instructions

Store unopened sachets below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild nausea when the solution is drunk too quickly.
  • Common: Bloating or a feeling of fullness after drinking a full sachet.
  • Serious: Vomiting that prevents the solution from being kept down, which can worsen dehydration and needs medical assessment.
  • Serious: Swelling, reduced urination, or confusion, which can indicate excess fluid or electrolyte imbalance and require urgent medical review, particularly in people with kidney or heart disease.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in cases of severe, uncontrolled vomiting where the solution cannot be kept down — intravenous fluid replacement may be needed instead; seek medical care.
  • Avoid use in people with intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus (a blocked or non-functioning bowel).
  • Use with caution and under medical supervision in people with impaired kidney function, as electrolyte levels need closer monitoring.
  • Avoid use if you have a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the sachet.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • This product should not be taken at the same time as other oral electrolyte or rehydration products without medical advice, to avoid excessive sodium or potassium intake.
  • People taking potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or other medicines that raise blood potassium should check with a doctor or pharmacist before regular use, as the potassium chloride in this product may add to that effect.
  • No specific food interactions are known, though the glucose content should be considered by people who are closely monitoring their carbohydrate or sugar intake.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the exact water volume stated on the sachet — making the solution too concentrated can be uncomfortable and less effective.
  • Sip the solution slowly rather than drinking it in one go, especially if there is ongoing nausea.
  • Continue offering the child’s or your own usual food and breast milk/formula alongside the solution, rather than withholding food.
  • Prepare a fresh sachet for each dosing session rather than storing mixed solution for more than 24 hours.
  • Keep a few sachets on hand when travelling, especially to areas with a higher risk of travellers’ diarrhoea.
  • Note the exact time and frequency of loose stools so you can describe this clearly if you need to see a doctor.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Each sachet contains Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, and Glucose—carefully balanced to World Health Organization standards for oral rehydration therapy.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use with care in infants, elderly people, and those with kidney or heart conditions, who should be monitored more closely for fluid or electrolyte imbalance. Pregnant or breastfeeding women can generally use standard ORS but should check with a pharmacist if symptoms are severe or prolonged.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical attention if diarrhoea or vomiting lasts more than 24-48 hours, if there is blood in the stool, high fever, persistent vomiting, signs of severe dehydration (sunken eyes, very dry mouth, little or no urination, lethargy), or if an infant, elderly person, or someone with a chronic illness is affected.
