Overview

Esbriet 267mg Hard Capsule contains pirfenidone 267mg, an antifibrotic medicine used specifically to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) – a chronic, progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs of unknown cause. It is prescribed and monitored by a respiratory specialist experienced in managing IPF.

Pirfenidone is thought to work by reducing the production and action of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and other mediators involved in fibrosis, thereby slowing the deposition of scar tissue in the lungs and the decline in lung function that occurs in IPF.

How it Works

By interfering with fibrotic signalling pathways, including those driven by TGF-β, pirfenidone is thought to reduce the excessive deposition of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the lungs that characterises IPF, helping to slow the progressive loss of lung function associated with the disease.

Directions for Use

Take Esbriet 267mg Hard Capsule capsules with food to help reduce nausea, and swallow them whole with water. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as this may affect how the medicine is broken down in your body. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear protective clothing, and avoid direct sunlight and sunlamps/tanning beds throughout treatment, as pirfenidone can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight.

Dosage

Esbriet 267mg Hard Capsule is typically started at a lower dose and titrated gradually over the first two to four weeks, under your specialist’s supervision, up to the target maintenance dose taken three times daily with food. Never change your own dose – any adjustment, including after side effects or missed doses, must be directed by your specialist.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Esbriet 267mg Hard Capsule used for?

Esbriet 267mg Hard Capsule is used specifically to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a progressive lung-scarring disease, under the supervision of a respiratory specialist.

Why do I need to avoid the sun while taking this medicine?

Pirfenidone can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn-like reactions. Sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning beds are important throughout treatment.

Why is my dose being increased gradually?

Starting at a lower dose and titrating up gradually, as directed by your specialist, helps your body adjust and reduces the chance of nausea and other gastrointestinal side effects during the first few weeks of treatment.

Will I need regular blood tests while taking this medicine?

Yes. Regular liver function blood tests are required throughout treatment, as pirfenidone can, in rare cases, affect the liver.

Can I stop taking this medicine if I feel unwell?

Do not stop or change your dose on your own. Contact your specialist, who will advise whether to continue, adjust, or temporarily pause treatment based on your symptoms.
