Ethylchloride Spray Walter Ritter

Ethylchloride Spray Walter Ritter is a topical vapocoolant spray containing ethyl chloride (chloroethane) as its sole active ingredient, supplied in a pressurised spray canister/bottle. It is sold in Malaysia and Singapore as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product, typically used by sports therapists, first-aiders, and members of the public for brief, ideally supervised topical cooling applications, and is available from pharmacies without needing a doctor’s prescription.

Ethyl chloride works purely through a physical mechanism — it has an extremely low boiling point, so when sprayed onto skin it evaporates almost instantly, drawing heat away from the surface and producing a rapid, deep chilling and brief numbing effect at the site of application. This physical cooling action is why the product is classified as a vapocoolant rather than a chemical anaesthetic cream, and it is this same volatility that makes the product both effective for very brief topical use and genuinely hazardous if handled incorrectly.

Because ethyl chloride is a highly volatile, flammable liquid whose vapour can also cause serious harm if deliberately inhaled, this product must be treated with particular care compared with an ordinary topical spray: it should be used only briefly and only on intact skin, kept well away from any flame, spark, or heat source during and after use, and never used for any purpose other than the brief topical cooling described on the label.

• Hold the canister upright, 15-20cm away from the intended area of intact skin.
• Spray briefly — typically for only 3 to 5 seconds — until the skin surface turns visibly pale/white and feels numb; stop spraying as soon as this happens.
• Do not spray continuously or for a prolonged period, and do not spray repeatedly onto the same spot in a short space of time, as this significantly increases the risk of frostbite-type skin and tissue damage.
• Use only in a well-ventilated area, away from any open flame, lit cigarette, spark, or other ignition source, as the vapour is flammable.
• Do not inhale the spray or vapour directly, and do not spray toward the face.

There is no oral “dose” for this product — it is a topical spray applied briefly (typically 3 to 5 seconds per application) to intact skin, as described in Directions for Use. Do not repeat the application to the same site more than occasionally, and allow the skin to fully return to normal temperature and colour between applications; repeated or prolonged spraying to the same area is a direct cause of frostbite-type cold injury, not a way to increase or prolong the numbing effect.

Use before the expiry date printed on the canister. Do not use this product if the canister is damaged, dented, leaking, or shows signs of corrosion, and always store and dispose of it as a pressurised, flammable product rather than as ordinary household waste.

Store below 25°C (or as stated on the pack), away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and any open flame, as the contents are flammable and the canister may be pressurised. Store upright, away from children, and away from ignition sources such as stoves, heaters, or lit cigarettes. Do not puncture, incinerate, or expose the canister to temperatures above those stated on the label, even when apparently empty.

• Common: Temporary skin whitening, redness, or a stinging/tingling sensation at the application site as normal skin temperature and colour return.
• Uncommon: Localised skin irritation lasting longer than expected after a single brief application.
• Serious (seek urgent care): Frostbite-type cold injury to the skin — including blistering, persistent numbness, discolouration, or tissue damage — can occur if the spray is applied for too long, too closely, or repeatedly to the same area, and needs prompt medical attention.
• Serious (seek urgent care): Deliberately inhaling the spray or its vapour, rather than using it as a brief topical application, can cause dangerous effects including irregular heartbeat, loss of consciousness, and, in documented cases, death — this is a genuine and recognised misuse risk with this type of product, not a theoretical one, and requires emergency medical attention if it occurs.

• Do not use on broken, irritated, sunburned, or wounded skin, or on skin with poor circulation.
• Do not use near the eyes, mouth, nose, or any mucous membrane, or on the genitals.
• Do not use near any open flame, spark, lit cigarette, or other ignition source, and do not use in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space, because the vapour is flammable.
• Never deliberately inhale the spray or its vapour for any purpose — this is a serious misuse of the product that can cause fatal heart rhythm disturbances, and is not a safe or intended way to use it.
• Known hypersensitivity to ethyl chloride or any other ingredient.
• Not for use in young children, and use in adolescents should be supervised by an adult or a trained first-aider/sports therapist.

• Not applicable in the usual medicine-interaction sense, as this product is used briefly on the skin surface and is not intended to be absorbed systemically or taken orally.
• No specific food interactions apply, as this product is for external topical use only.
• Combining this spray with other topical anaesthetic or cooling products on the same area at the same time is not recommended, as it may mask the extent of any skin damage from overuse of either product.

• Keep the spray distance and duration exactly as described on the label — brief and from the stated distance, never closer or longer.
• Stop spraying the moment the skin turns pale/white and feels numb; do not wait for a stronger effect.
• Always use in a well-ventilated space, never near a flame, spark, or lit cigarette.
• Never use this product to deliberately inhale its vapour under any circumstances — this is a genuine safety risk, not just a label warning.
• Store the canister upright, away from heat sources, and out of reach of children and adolescents.
• If you are a coach, first-aider, or parent supervising use on a young athlete, apply or directly supervise every application yourself.

Precautions: This product is intended for brief, occasional topical use on intact skin only, ideally under the supervision of a trained first-aider, sports therapist, or healthcare professional, particularly when used on children or adolescents. Because the product is both flammable and volatile, it should never be used near heat, flame, or in an unventilated space, and the canister should be handled and stored exactly as any other flammable pressurised product would be. Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist first, as data on topical ethyl chloride use in these situations is limited.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek prompt medical attention if the skin shows signs of frostbite-type injury (persistent whitening, blistering, hardness, or numbness that does not resolve within a short time) after use. Seek emergency medical help immediately if this product has been deliberately inhaled or misused in any way, as this can cause a dangerous, potentially fatal, heart rhythm disturbance requiring urgent treatment — do not wait to see if symptoms resolve on their own.
