Overview

Euthyrox 50mcg Tablet is a tablet with Levothyroxine Sodium 50mcg declared as its active content. It is supplied in pack sizes of 100s and 25s.

This is a non-prescription product and can be purchased without a prescription. Only product, safety and handling details are published on this page.

An online consultation with a DoctorOnCall doctor or pharmacist is available for this product, and a registered pharmacist reviews each order before dispatch to Malaysia or Singapore. Follow the directions on the label and on the leaflet inside the pack.

Directions for Use

Euthyrox 50mcg Tablet should be taken once daily, generally first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast or any other medicine, and swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Consistency matters with levothyroxine, so it should be taken at the same time and in the same relationship to food each day, rather than varying the routine, to keep absorption predictable.

Dosage

The 50mcg strength is commonly used either as an initial dose in adults without significant heart disease, or as part of a maintenance regimen once thyroid function has stabilised, with the exact requirement confirmed by the prescribing doctor based on thyroid function test results. Dose changes, when needed, are usually made in small increments and reassessed with blood tests after several weeks, rather than adjusted based on symptoms alone.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and keep tablets in their original blister packaging until they are needed. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Sleeplessness (insomnia)
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Sweating
  • Palpitations or rapid heartbeat
  • Menstrual irregularities

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to levothyroxine or any excipient in the tablet
  • Untreated adrenal insufficiency or untreated pituitary insufficiency, unless being managed concurrently
  • Untreated overactive thyroid (thyrotoxicosis)
  • Recent acute heart attack or acute inflammatory heart conditions, unless specifically cleared by a cardiologist
  • Should not be started or adjusted without a doctor’s prescription and monitoring plan

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Calcium and iron supplements, and antacids containing aluminium or magnesium — these reduce levothyroxine absorption if taken too close together; separate doses by at least 4 hours
  • Proton pump inhibitors and cholestyramine-type cholesterol-lowering agents, which can also reduce absorption
  • Oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) — levothyroxine can enhance their anticoagulant effect, requiring closer monitoring
  • Oestrogen-containing medicines, including some contraceptives and hormone therapy, which can change thyroid hormone binding and dose needs
  • High-fibre meals and soy-based foods taken close to the dose, which may reduce absorption

Quick Tips

  • Take Euthyrox 50mcg Tablet at the same time every morning on an empty stomach for the most predictable absorption
  • Attend all scheduled thyroid blood tests, since dosing decisions rely on these results
  • Avoid switching brands or strengths of levothyroxine without informing your doctor
  • Tell your doctor about any new heart symptoms, anxiety, or sleep problems, as these may indicate the dose needs review
  • Remember that treatment is usually long-term, so consistent daily use matters more than short bursts

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Levothyroxine Sodium 50mcg (active ingredient)
  • Microcrystalline cellulose and other standard tablet excipients
  • Citric acid as a stabiliser, as used in the branded formulation
  • Colouring agents specific to the 50mcg tablet strength for easy identification

Relevant Information

Euthyrox 50mcg Tablet is one of the more frequently used starting or maintenance strengths for hypothyroidism in adults without significant cardiac risk, and treatment is typically continued long-term with periodic thyroid function testing to confirm the dose remains correct as the body’s needs change, for example during pregnancy, weight changes, or with age. Any symptoms suggesting the dose is too high or too low should prompt a review with the prescribing doctor rather than a self-directed change.
