Overview

Febuton 80mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine (POM) that contains Febuxostat 80mg. It is supplied as a tablet and is dispensed in Malaysia only against a valid prescription issued by a registered doctor.

Under Malaysian rules for prescription medicines, this page carries product, safety and handling information only. Your doctor or pharmacist will explain whether this medicine is suitable for you, the dose you should take, and how long you should take it.

On DoctorOnCall, Febuton 80mg Tablet is reviewed by a licensed doctor through an online consultation and dispensed by a registered pharmacist before delivery. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label and the package insert supplied with the product, and do not share this medicine with anyone else.

Directions for Use

Take Febuton 80mg Tablet once daily, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine on your own if you experience a gout flare after starting treatment – continue as directed and speak to your doctor about flare management.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Febuton 80mg Tablet is 40mg once daily, which your doctor may increase to 80mg once daily if your uric acid target has not been reached after about two to four weeks. This medicine should be continued long-term as directed, even during a gout flare, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Rash
  • Dizziness
  • Liver function changes (may require monitoring)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to febuxostat or any ingredient in this product
  • Concurrent use of azathioprine or mercaptopurine (dangerous interaction via the same enzyme pathway)
  • Pre-existing ischaemic heart disease or congestive heart failure, requiring careful doctor risk-benefit assessment before starting
  • Severe hepatic impairment

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Azathioprine and mercaptopurine must not be combined with febuxostat, as it blocks their breakdown and can cause dangerous toxicity
  • Theophylline levels may increase when combined with febuxostat, requiring monitoring
  • Your doctor may prescribe a short course of an NSAID or colchicine when you start febuxostat to reduce the risk of a gout flare during the initial weeks
  • Alcohol in excess may raise uric acid levels and reduce treatment effectiveness

Quick Tips

  • Gout flares can occur when you first start this medicine, as urate deposits are mobilised – this is expected and does not mean the medicine is not working, so keep taking it and speak to your doctor about flare management
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease or stroke before starting, as febuxostat carries a cardiovascular risk consideration
  • Attend scheduled liver function blood tests during treatment
  • Continue this medicine long-term as directed, even between flares, since it lowers uric acid gradually over time
  • Stay well hydrated and discuss alcohol intake with your doctor, as both affect uric acid levels
