Overview

Felocor 5mg Tablet contains felodipine 5mg, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or together with other blood pressure medicines.

Felodipine works mainly on the smooth muscle of blood vessel walls, where it blocks calcium channels, causing the vessels to relax and widen. This reduces resistance to blood flow, lowering blood pressure, with minimal direct effect on the heart’s pumping strength or rhythm.

How it Works

Felodipine selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium entry into these cells and causing arterial vasodilation. Because it has high selectivity for blood vessels over heart muscle, it lowers blood pressure with little effect on heart rate or contractility at usual doses.

Directions for Use

Take Felocor 5mg Tablet once daily, in the morning, with or without food, but avoid taking it with grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush, chew, or split it.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Felocor 5mg Tablet is often 5mg once daily, adjusted by your doctor based on your blood pressure response, typically up to a maximum individualised dose. Dose increases are usually made gradually, with at least a few weeks between adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Felocor 5mg Tablet used for?

Felocor 5mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure, either as a single medicine or combined with other blood pressure treatments as needed.

Why should I avoid grapefruit while taking this medicine?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can significantly raise felodipine levels in the blood, increasing the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure and ankle swelling.

Why do my ankles swell while taking this medicine?

Ankle or foot swelling (peripheral oedema) is a known effect of felodipine and other dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, related to their effect on small blood vessels. Tell your doctor if it is bothersome or worsening.

Can I crush this tablet if I have trouble swallowing it?

No, this is usually an extended-release tablet and must be swallowed whole. Crushing or splitting it can release the medicine too quickly, potentially causing a sudden drop in blood pressure.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Felocor 5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
