Forlax Kids Powder

Forlax Kids Powder is a paediatric-strength osmotic laxative powder. Each sachet contains 4g of Macrogol 4000, a lower strength than the standard adult Forlax sachet, and is dissolved in water before being given to the child. It is sold in Malaysia as a box of 20 sachets, labelled for children aged 6 months to 8 years, and is available through pharmacy chains including CARiNG Pharmacy and independent community pharmacies.

This 4g paediatric formulation is not the same product as Forlax Macrogol 4000 Powder, which contains 10g of Macrogol 4000 per sachet for adult use — the two packs should not be substituted for one another, and parents should check the gram strength printed on the carton before use.

As an OTC product, Forlax Kids Powder is available in Malaysia and Singapore through registered pharmacies and online pharmacies without needing a doctor’s prescription, though checking with a pharmacist is worthwhile, particularly for infants under 1 year of age or for repeated use.

• Dissolve the contents of one sachet in at least 50ml of water and stir well.
• Give the prepared solution to the child immediately after mixing; do not prepare it in advance.
• It can be given at any convenient time of day, preferably as a single dose in the morning.
• It may be given with or without food.
• If more than one sachet a day is needed, split this into separate doses rather than combining it into one large drink.

Malaysian retail labelling for this product describes the following general age-based guidance: children aged 6 months to 1 year, 1 sachet daily in the morning; children aged 1 to 4 years, 1 to 2 sachets daily; and children aged 4 to 8 years, up to around 2 to 4 sachets daily, adjusted according to response. Because sources describe slightly different age bands and maximum doses for this product, always follow the specific dosing table printed on the carton and package insert for the exact pack you have, or check with a pharmacist, rather than relying on a single generalised figure — this is especially important for infants under 1 year of age.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children.

• Common: mild bloating or abdominal discomfort, especially when starting treatment.
• Common: occasional loose or watery stools, particularly at higher doses.
• Uncommon: nausea.
• Serious: signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling of the face, or difficulty breathing, which need immediate medical attention.

• Known hypersensitivity to macrogol (polyethylene glycol) or any of the other ingredients.
• Bowel obstruction or perforation, or severe abdominal pain of unknown cause.
• Severe inflammatory bowel conditions, or toxic megacolon.
• Use in infants below the minimum age stated on the pack, without a doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice.

• Giving this product at the same time as other oral medicines may reduce how well they are absorbed if bowel movements become frequent; ask a pharmacist whether other regular medicines need to be timed differently.
• No specific food interactions have been identified; it can be given with or without meals.
• Combining this product with other laxatives in a child is not usually necessary and should only be done on a doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice.

• Mix each sachet with the full amount of water stated on the pack and give it to the child right away.
• Encourage your child to keep up their usual fluid intake through the day.
• Use the age-based dosing table on the pack rather than guessing the amount.
• Keep sachets in their original box, out of reach of children, until ready to use.
• Check the printed expiry date before each use.
• Speak to a pharmacist if your child needs this product for more than a couple of weeks.

Precautions: Confirm the exact age-based dose on the printed carton before giving this product to a child, and check with a doctor or pharmacist first for infants under 1 year of age, or for children with kidney problems or a condition affecting fluid and electrolyte balance. This paediatric-strength (4g) formulation is not interchangeable with the 10g adult Forlax Macrogol 4000 Powder.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor if your child’s constipation does not improve after one to two weeks of use, if there is blood in the stools, ongoing vomiting, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain, or if your child needs a laxative repeatedly over a long period.
