Fybogel Orange

Fybogel Orange is an over-the-counter (OTC) fibre supplement in the form of effervescent granules, supplied in single-dose sachets. Each sachet contains 3.5g of ispaghula husk (also known as psyllium husk), a natural plant-derived soluble fibre, combined with orange flavouring and a sugar-free sweetening system. The product is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser, an established international consumer healthcare company, and is registered for sale in Malaysia with a valid NPRA product registration.

Fybogel Orange is prepared by dissolving the contents of one sachet in a glass of cold water, stirring, and drinking immediately while the granules are still effervescing. It is an oral product intended to be swallowed with an adequate amount of water rather than taken dry. The orange-flavoured, sugar-free formulation is one of several flavour variants of Fybogel sold across different markets, distinguishing it from unflavoured or other flavoured ispaghula husk products.

As an OTC product, Fybogel Orange can be purchased from community pharmacies and licensed online pharmacies in both Malaysia and Singapore without needing a doctor’s prescription. It is typically sold in boxes of 10 or 30 single-dose sachets, and customers should read the printed package leaflet for full details before use.

• Empty the contents of one sachet into a glass containing approximately 150ml of cold water. Stir well and drink immediately while the mixture is still fizzing, as the granules can thicken quickly once fully dissolved.
• Fybogel Orange is usually taken in the morning and evening, after meals, unless a pharmacist advises a different schedule. Always drink each dose with a full glass of water, and maintain a generally adequate daily fluid intake while using this product.
• Do not take this product immediately before bedtime, and separate it from other oral medicines by at least 30 minutes to two hours, as ispaghula husk can affect how some other medicines are absorbed.

The typical adult and adolescent (over 12 years) dose is one to two sachets, taken one to two times a day, usually in the morning and evening after meals, or as directed on the packaging.

For children under 12 years, dosing should only follow a doctor’s or pharmacist’s specific guidance rather than the adult dose, as sources vary on exact paediatric dosing and the printed pack insert should be the reference for age-appropriate use.

If a dose is missed, take it at the next usual time; do not double up doses. If symptoms do not improve within about a week of regular use, stop self-treating and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Use Fybogel Orange before the expiry date printed on the sachet and carton. Once a sachet is opened, use its contents immediately as directed; do not store a made-up drink for later use.

Store sachets at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep unopened sachets in their original carton, and keep out of the reach of children.

• Common: Bloating or a feeling of fullness, especially during the first few days of use.
• Common: Increased flatulence (wind).
• Common: Mild abdominal cramping.
• Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing/swallowing — seek urgent medical attention if these occur.
• Serious: Chest pain or difficulty swallowing shortly after taking a dose, which may indicate the product has not been taken with enough liquid and has caused a blockage — seek urgent medical attention.

• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to ispaghula husk or any other ingredient in Fybogel Orange.
• Difficulty swallowing, a diagnosed bowel obstruction, faecal impaction, or intestinal narrowing (stricture).
• Sudden changes in bowel habit that have not been assessed by a doctor, as these may need medical evaluation before starting a fibre supplement.
• Poorly controlled diabetes, where the effervescent granules’ sodium/carbohydrate content should be checked on the label, or phenylketonuria, since this sugar-free formulation contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine.

• Ispaghula husk can reduce the absorption of some other oral medicines if taken at the same time, so it is generally recommended to separate Fybogel Orange from other medicines by at least 30 minutes to two hours.
• Always take each sachet with a full glass of water; taking it with too little liquid can affect how well it works and how safely it passes through the digestive tract.
• People with phenylketonuria should check the label, as this sugar-free formulation contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine.

• Always mix Fybogel Orange with a full glass of water and drink it right away while it is still fizzing.
• Take other oral medicines at least 30 minutes to 2 hours apart from this product.
• Introduce it gradually and maintain good overall fluid intake through the day, especially during the first few days.
• Keep to a regular daily routine, such as morning and evening after meals, for consistency.
• Store sachets in their original carton away from heat and moisture.
• Check the expiry date on the sachet before use.

Precautions: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, elderly patients, and people with diabetes or phenylketonuria should check the product label and speak with a pharmacist before regular use. Always take this product with plenty of water and never in a lying-down position, to reduce the risk of the granules causing throat or oesophageal blockage.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms do not improve after about a week of regular use, if you experience rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal pain, or if you notice chest pain or difficulty swallowing after taking a dose.

Fybogel Orange is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser and is registered for OTC sale in Malaysia, where it is stocked as a fibre supplement sachet at major pharmacy chains.
