Overview

Germacid 2% Ointment is supplied as an ointment, with Sodium Fusidate (Fusidic Acid) 2%. It is supplied in a pack size of 15g.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is a non-prescription medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

Clean the affected area of skin gently and pat dry, then apply a thin layer of Germacid 2% Ointment directly to the infected area using a clean finger or cotton swab. The area can be covered with a light dressing if needed to protect clothing, unless your pharmacist advises otherwise. Wash your hands before and after application, and avoid contact with the eyes.

Dosage

Germacid 2% Ointment is usually applied to the affected area two to three times a day for up to seven days, or as directed on the product packaging. If there is no improvement after this period, or if the infection worsens, stop using the ointment and consult a doctor or pharmacist rather than continuing use for a longer period.

Shelf Life

Germacid 2% Ointment is generally stable for up to 24 to 36 months from the date of manufacture when unopened and stored correctly. Always check the expiry date printed on the tube or carton before use, and discard the product once opened for longer than the period stated on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store Germacid 2% Ointment at room temperature, below 30 degrees Celsius, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tube tightly closed after each use, and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Diarrhoea
  • Skin rash or irritation (especially with topical use)
  • Temporary liver enzyme changes
  • Headache

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to fusidic acid, sodium fusidate, or any ingredient in the ointment
  • Not for use in or near the eyes
  • Not intended for widespread or deep skin infections, or infections with fever, which need medical assessment
  • Avoid prolonged or repeated use without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of bacterial resistance

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are established with correct topical use
  • Avoid applying other topical antibiotic or antiseptic creams to the same area at the same time unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist
  • Inform your pharmacist if you are using other skin treatments on nearby areas
  • Not intended to be combined with occlusive dressings for prolonged periods unless advised, as this may increase local absorption

Quick Tips

  • Apply Germacid 2% Ointment only to the affected area, not to large areas of healthy skin
  • Complete the full course as directed, even if the skin looks better, to reduce the risk of the infection returning
  • Avoid sharing towels or personal items while the infection is active to prevent spreading it to others
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after each application
  • See a doctor if the infection spreads, worsens, or does not improve within about a week

Relevant Information

Germacid 2% Ointment is intended for short-term use on localised, minor bacterial skin infections, and is not a treatment for viral or fungal skin conditions. Overuse or prolonged use of topical antibiotics like fusidic acid can contribute to antibiotic resistance, so it should be used strictly according to the directions and not for longer than necessary. Good wound hygiene, such as keeping the area clean and covered where appropriate, supports the ointment’s antibacterial action and helps the skin heal.
