Side effects, safety and when to seek help

Side effects, safety and when to seek help

  • Common effects of this type of medicine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort, which may vary between individuals.
  • Do not take it if you have severe liver or kidney disease, are allergic to colchicine, or are taking certain strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or P-glycoprotein inhibitors. Some antibiotics, antifungals and heart medicines can interact with it.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice and grapefruit, as they can raise colchicine levels in the body. Statins and fibrates taken together with colchicine may increase the risk of muscle toxicity. Tell your pharmacist or doctor about all medicines, supplements and herbal products you take.
  • Stop using it and seek medical advice if you feel unwell after taking it. Seek immediate medical attention for severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual muscle pain or weakness, numbness or tingling, unusual bruising or bleeding, or any severe or unexpected reaction.

How to take your Goutnor Tablet

Dosage

The dosage of Goutnor Tablet is determined individually by your prescribing doctor based on whether it is being used to treat an acute gout flare or to prevent future attacks, as well as your kidney and liver function and other medicines you take. For an acute attack a doctor may prescribe an initial dose followed by smaller doses at intervals, up to a defined maximum within a course, while prophylactic use typically involves a low once- or twice-daily dose; doses are often reduced in older adults or those with reduced kidney function. Always follow your prescription exactly and never adjust the dose yourself.

Shelf Life

Goutnor Tablet is generally stable for up to 24 to 36 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and unopened. Always check the expiry date printed on the blister strip or carton before use, and do not take the tablets if the date has passed.

Relevant Information

Colchicine has a narrow therapeutic index, meaning the difference between an effective and a toxic dose is small, so Goutnor Tablet must only be used under close medical supervision. Doctors will often check kidney and liver function before and during treatment, and review other medicines being taken to avoid dangerous interactions. Lifestyle measures such as limiting alcohol, reducing purine-rich foods, and maintaining a healthy weight are commonly recommended alongside medical treatment to help manage gout in the longer term.
