Hospitech Alcohol Swabs

Hospitech Alcohol Swabs are individually wrapped cotton pads pre-soaked with 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and purified water, sealed in a single-use foil or paper sachet. Unlike the other dressing materials in this range, this is the one product in the Hospitech line that contains a genuine active antiseptic ingredient, so it sits between a simple consumable and a topical antiseptic product. Packs are commonly supplied as 100 individually wrapped swabs per box.

Each swab dries quickly from the skin surface after wiping and does not leave a sticky or oily residue, which is a property of isopropyl alcohol’s rapid evaporation. It is sold as a general OTC consumable in Malaysia and does not require a prescription. Because each swab is individually sealed, a fresh, unused swab is available for every single wipe, rather than drawing repeatedly from one shared bulk container.

The active ingredient in each swab is 70% isopropyl alcohol in an aqueous solution. On contact with the skin surface, isopropyl alcohol denatures the proteins and disrupts the lipid membranes of bacteria and other microorganisms present on the surface being wiped, which is the standard mechanism by which alcohol-based antiseptics act. The 70% concentration is commonly used in this type of product because a small amount of water content slows evaporation just long enough for the alcohol to penetrate microbial cell membranes before it dries off.

Isopropyl alcohol is volatile, so once wiped onto the skin it evaporates within seconds, which is why the swab does not leave a visible film or moisture behind. The cotton pad itself simply acts as a carrier that holds and releases the alcohol solution evenly as it is wiped across the skin.

Wash your hands before handling a swab where practical. Tear open one individual sachet immediately before use and remove the pre-soaked cotton pad. Wipe the pad firmly across the skin area to be cleaned, such as before an injection or fingerstick test, or over a minor cut or graze, using a single directional wipe rather than scrubbing back and forth over the same spot repeatedly.

Allow the area to air-dry for a few seconds before any needle, lancet, or dressing is applied, since isopropyl alcohol needs a short contact time to be effective and can sting if a needle is inserted while the skin is still wet. Use one swab per wipe and per person, then discard it — do not reuse a swab on a second site or reseal a sachet for later use once it has been opened.

Refer to the expiry date printed on the individual sachet and outer carton, and do not use a swab beyond this date, as alcohol content and sachet integrity can reduce over time. Once a sachet is opened, the swab should be used immediately, as isopropyl alcohol evaporates and the pad will dry out quickly once exposed to air.

Store sealed sachets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and away from any naked flame or heat source, since isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep the box out of reach of children, and do not puncture or store sachets under pressure or heat, which could compromise the seal and allow the alcohol to evaporate prematurely.

• Common: a brief stinging or cooling sensation on the skin immediately after wiping, and mild, temporary dryness of the skin with frequent repeated use.
• Serious: signs of an allergic or irritant skin reaction such as redness, itching, blistering, or a rash spreading beyond the wiped area — stop use and seek medical advice if this occurs.

• Known allergy or hypersensitivity to isopropyl alcohol or to cotton fibres used in the pad.
• Do not apply to open wounds, broken skin, mucous membranes, the eyes, or near the mouth or nose, as isopropyl alcohol can cause significant stinging and irritation on these surfaces.

• Not applicable in the usual sense — this is a topical antiseptic wipe for external skin cleansing, not a systemic medicine, so it does not interact with oral medicines, supplements, or food through normal use.
• Keep swabs away from open flame, electrocautery devices, or defibrillator pads during medical procedures, as isopropyl alcohol vapour and residue are flammable.

• Open one sachet immediately before use so the alcohol does not evaporate before you need it.
• Wipe in a single direction rather than scrubbing back and forth over the same spot.
• Let the skin air-dry for a few seconds before an injection, fingerstick, or dressing is applied.

Precautions: Use in a well-ventilated area where possible, as inhaling concentrated alcohol vapour repeatedly in an enclosed space can cause mild light-headedness. Keep away from naked flame, sparks, or heat sources at all times, including during any procedure that also uses electrocautery or similar heat-based equipment. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and broken skin, and supervise use around children.
