Hurix’s Pain Relief Massage Balm

Hurix’s Pain Relief Massage Balm is a topical herbal balm from the Malaysian traditional-product brand Hurix’s, supplied in a 20g jar for external application to the skin. It is formulated as a semi-solid balm combining menthol, camphor, methyl salicylate, eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil together with other traditional herbal oils in a balm base.

The balm is registered with Malaysia’s National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) as a traditional product and is sold as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) item, meaning it can be purchased directly from a pharmacy or online without needing a doctor’s prescription. It is part of Hurix’s wider Ointment Series, a range of topical herbal balms and medicated oils.

The balm has a characteristic warming, menthol-eucalyptus scent from its essential oil content and comes in a compact jar sized for home use or a travel or first-aid bag. It is intended for external application to intact skin only, and is not meant for internal use, broken skin, or contact with the eyes and other mucous membranes.

Wash and dry the area of skin before use.

Take a small amount of balm on the fingertips and massage it gently onto the affected area for about 2 to 3 minutes until absorbed.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after application, unless the hands themselves are the area being treated.

Avoid applying the balm to broken skin, open wounds, the eyes, or other mucous membranes.

For adults: apply a small amount of balm and massage into the affected area for 2 to 3 minutes, up to 3 times a day, or as needed.

Use on children is not recommended unless a pharmacist or doctor has specifically advised it.

If discomfort in the applied area continues after about 7 days of regular use, stop self-treating and speak with a pharmacist or doctor rather than continuing to apply the balm.

Use the balm before the expiry date printed on the jar and outer packaging.

Once opened, the balm is best used within a reasonable period, as it is exposed to air each time the jar is opened; discard it if the texture, colour or smell changes noticeably.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.

Close the lid tightly after each use to stop the balm drying out or losing its essential oil content.

Keep out of reach and sight of children.

• Common: a warm or tingling sensation on the skin shortly after application.
• Common: mild, temporary redness at the site of application.
• Serious: an allergic skin reaction such as itching, swelling, blistering, or a rash spreading beyond the applied area — stop use and seek medical attention if this occurs.
• Serious: burning or irritation if the balm contacts the eyes, nose, mouth or other mucous membranes — rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if irritation does not settle.

• Do not use on broken, cracked, or wounded skin.
• Do not apply to the eyes, inside the nose or mouth, or other mucous membranes.
• Do not use if you have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to menthol, camphor, methyl salicylate, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, or any other listed ingredient.
• Not intended for use on infants and young children.

• No clinically significant food interactions have been reported for topical use of this balm.
• Avoid combining with other topical products containing methyl salicylate, camphor, or menthol on the same area of skin, as this can increase the risk of irritation.
• People using an oral or topical anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medicine should be cautious about applying methyl salicylate-containing balms over large areas of skin, and should check with a pharmacist first.
• Applying direct heat, such as a heating pad, over the balm is not recommended, as it may increase absorption and the risk of skin irritation.

• Do a small patch test on an inconspicuous area of skin before first use if your skin is sensitive.
• Massage the balm in gently rather than rubbing hard, to avoid friction irritation on the skin.
• Close the jar lid firmly after each use to keep the balm from drying out or losing its scent.
• Keep the jar away from open flame or direct heat sources, as it contains essential oils.
• Wash your hands after applying the balm to avoid accidentally transferring it to your eyes or mouth.
• Store the balm at room temperature rather than in a hot car or under direct sun, which can change its texture.

Precautions: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should check with a pharmacist or doctor before using this balm, as topical products containing methyl salicylate are generally used with caution during pregnancy. People with very sensitive or broken skin, young children, and anyone with a known fragrance or salicylate allergy should take extra care or avoid use altogether.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if the affected area becomes swollen, hot, or is associated with fever, if discomfort following an injury does not improve after a few days of regular use, or if you notice a skin reaction such as blistering, spreading redness, or severe itching after applying the balm.
