Overview

Levet 500mg Tablet contains levetiracetam 500mg, an antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) medicine used to treat partial-onset seizures, myoclonic seizures, and primary generalised tonic-clonic seizures, either alone or together with other antiepileptic medicines.

Levetiracetam works by binding to a protein called synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in nerve endings, which modulates the release of neurotransmitters and is thought to reduce the abnormal, excessive electrical activity in the brain that causes seizures. Its mechanism differs from most older antiepileptic drugs, which act mainly on sodium channels or GABA receptors.

How it Works

Levetiracetam binds selectively to SV2A, a protein on synaptic vesicles involved in neurotransmitter release. By modulating vesicle function, it is believed to dampen abnormal, hypersynchronous nerve firing associated with seizure activity without significantly affecting normal neurotransmission.

Directions for Use

Take Levet 500mg Tablet at evenly spaced times, about 12 hours apart, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel well, as abruptly stopping antiepileptic treatment can trigger seizures or prolonged seizure activity; any dose change must be guided by your doctor.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Levet 500mg Tablet is a lower dose taken twice daily, which your doctor may gradually increase based on seizure control and tolerability, up to a maximum individualised dose. Always take exactly as prescribed and never adjust the dose yourself.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Alcohol and other sedating medicines (sleeping tablets, some antihistamines) can increase drowsiness and impair concentration when combined
  • Other antiepileptic drugs may be combined under specialist supervision, with monitoring for additive side effects
  • Levetiracetam has relatively few significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions compared with older antiepileptics, but always inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking

Quick Tips

  • Take doses at the same times each day, evenly spaced, to keep blood levels steady and reduce seizure risk
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause drowsiness or dizziness
  • Tell your doctor or a family member if you notice new irritability, low mood, or unusual thoughts
  • Never stop this medicine abruptly – your doctor will guide any dose reduction gradually if treatment needs to change

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Levet 500mg Tablet used for?

Levet 500mg Tablet is used to control certain types of epileptic seizures, including partial-onset, myoclonic, and generalised tonic-clonic seizures, either alone or alongside other antiepileptic medicines.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my seizures are controlled?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. Suddenly stopping an antiepileptic medicine can trigger seizures to return or even cause a prolonged seizure episode; any change must be tapered under medical supervision.

Why might I feel more irritable or notice mood changes on this medicine?

Behavioural and mood changes, including irritability, are recognised effects of levetiracetam in some people. Tell your doctor promptly if you or those around you notice new irritability, aggression, low mood, or unusual thoughts, so your treatment can be reviewed.

Can I drink alcohol while taking this medicine?

It is best to avoid or limit alcohol, as it can add to the drowsiness and dizziness that levetiracetam can already cause, and may affect seizure control.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Levet 500mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose, and contact your doctor if you miss doses frequently, as this can increase seizure risk.
