Overview

Lotemp Kids 120mg/5ml Paracetamol Suspension is an oral liquid formulation of paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen), containing 120mg of paracetamol in every 5ml. It is manufactured by Biolab Co., Ltd. (Thailand) and distributed in Malaysia by Medispec. It belongs to the paracetamol/analgesic-antipyretic product class in the pediatric oral suspension dosage form, and is sold in a 60ml bottle.

The suspension is formulated specifically for children, generally suitable for those from about 3 months of age, and is typically flavoured to make it easier to administer to young children compared with a plain tablet. This distinguishes it from adult-strength paracetamol tablets or higher-concentration paediatric suspensions (such as 250mg/5ml products), which are not interchangeable with Lotemp Kids on a millilitre-for-millilitre basis.

Lotemp Kids 120mg/5ml Paracetamol Suspension is available in Malaysia as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product and can be purchased at a pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription. As with all paracetamol-containing products, care should be taken to check that a child is not already receiving paracetamol from another source before giving an additional dose.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before use. Use only the measuring device (dosing syringe or cup) provided with the product, or one obtained from a pharmacy, to measure the dose accurately — do not use a household spoon, as this can lead to an inaccurate dose. The suspension is given by mouth, directly or mixed into a small amount of the child’s usual drink if needed.

Because paracetamol is found in many other cold, flu, fever, and combination medicines, always check the ingredients of any other medicine — including other suspensions, tablets, or suppositories — before giving Lotemp Kids, to avoid giving a child paracetamol from more than one source at the same time, which can lead to a paracetamol overdose. If a child is also being given another paracetamol-containing product (prescribed or OTC), speak with a pharmacist or doctor before continuing to use Lotemp Kids.

Dosage

Different published sources give different exact age- and weight-based dosing tables for 120mg/5ml paracetamol suspensions in children (for example, some charts base the dose on a fixed per-weight-band volume, while others use a per-kilogram calculation), and these bands can vary between product inserts and countries. Because of this, a specific dose is not stated here — the dose given to a child should always follow the age/weight dosing table and maximum daily dose printed on the Lotemp Kids pack insert, or the amount specifically advised by a doctor or pharmacist based on the child’s weight.

As a general principle for paracetamol suspensions, doses are usually spaced at least 4 to 6 hours apart, and no more than 4 doses should be given in 24 hours, but the exact per-dose amount must come from the printed pack label or a healthcare professional rather than being estimated. If a dose is missed, give it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped. Seek medical attention if fever persists for more than 3 days, if pain persists for more than 5 days, if the child’s condition worsens, or if there are signs of an allergic reaction or accidental overdose (such as nausea, vomiting, or unusual paleness).

Shelf Life

Use Lotemp Kids Suspension before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer carton. Some paracetamol suspensions have a shorter in-use period after first opening — check the pack insert for any ‘discard after opening’ instructions and follow them.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat, in the original bottle with the cap tightly closed. Keep out of the reach and sight of children, since paracetamol suspension can look and taste appealing to a child but is dangerous if taken in excess.

Side Effects

  • Common: Paracetamol at recommended doses is generally well tolerated, and side effects are uncommon.
  • Common: Mild nausea or stomach upset in some children.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as skin rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing — seek medical attention immediately.
  • Serious: Signs of paracetamol overdose, including nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or unusual paleness, which can indicate liver damage and require urgent medical attention even if the child initially seems well.
  • Serious: Rare but serious skin reactions have been reported with paracetamol — stop use and seek medical care if a severe rash or skin peeling develops.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any other ingredient in the suspension.
  • Severe liver impairment or active liver disease, unless a doctor has advised otherwise.
  • Use in infants below the minimum age stated on the pack insert, unless directed by a doctor.
  • Concurrent use of another paracetamol-containing product, unless specifically directed by a doctor, due to the risk of cumulative paracetamol overdose.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not give together with any other medicine that also contains paracetamol (including combination cold and flu preparations, other fever/pain suspensions, or suppositories), as this can result in a paracetamol overdose.
  • Long-term or frequent use of paracetamol alongside certain anti-seizure medicines (such as phenytoin or carbamazepine) may increase the risk of liver effects — check with a doctor if the child is on long-term anti-seizure treatment.
  • Paracetamol may affect the accuracy of certain blood glucose or laboratory tests; inform the laboratory or doctor if the child is taking this suspension before any blood test.
  • No clinically significant food interactions are known for paracetamol suspension at recommended doses.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the dosing syringe or cup that comes with the bottle, not a kitchen spoon.
  • Shake the bottle well before every dose.
  • Check the label of any other medicine your child is taking to make sure it does not also contain paracetamol.
  • Note the time of each dose so you do not accidentally give doses too close together.
  • Store the bottle out of reach of children between uses, even if it is kept in the refrigerator or a bag.
  • Keep the printed pack insert so you can check the correct dose for your child’s current weight.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Each 5ml of Lotemp Kids Suspension contains 120mg of Paracetamol (also known as Acetaminophen) as the active ingredient. It also includes flavoring agents, sweeteners, and stabilizers suitable for children.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Always check the exact age and weight-based dose on the current pack insert before giving Lotemp Kids Suspension to a child, and never exceed the maximum number of doses stated for 24 hours. Take particular care to avoid duplicate paracetamol dosing from other medicines your child may be taking. Use with caution in children with existing liver problems, and consult a doctor first if your child is taking any other regular medication.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if your child’s fever lasts more than 3 days, if pain lasts more than 5 days, if symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear, or if you suspect an overdose or notice signs of an allergic reaction. A doctor or pharmacist should also be consulted before use in infants under 3 months of age or in children with liver disease.
