Overview

Lumigan 0.01% Eye Drop contains bimatoprost 0.01%, a prostaglandin analogue eye drop used to lower elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure, IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Bimatoprost works by increasing the outflow of the fluid inside the eye (aqueous humor) through an alternative drainage pathway called the uveoscleral pathway. By improving this outflow, less fluid builds up inside the eye, lowering the intraocular pressure that can otherwise damage the optic nerve over time.

How it Works

Bimatoprost acts on prostanoid receptors in the eye to increase outflow of aqueous humor via the uveoscleral pathway (a route distinct from the eye’s main trabecular meshwork drainage system). This lowers intraocular pressure, reducing the ongoing pressure-related damage to the optic nerve that leads to vision loss in glaucoma.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before use, tilt your head back, and instil one drop into the lower eyelid pocket of the affected eye without letting the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface. Gently close your eye for 1-2 minutes and press lightly on the inner corner (near the nose) to reduce drainage into the tear duct. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between different products.

Dosage

The usual dose of Lumigan 0.01% Eye Drop is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, in the evening, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Using it more often than once daily may actually reduce its pressure-lowering effect, so always follow your doctor’s prescribed schedule exactly.

Contraindications

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other prostaglandin analogue eye drops should generally not be used together, as this may reduce the overall pressure-lowering effect
  • Inform your doctor of all other eye drops you are using, so dosing can be spaced appropriately
  • Contact lenses should be removed before applying this eye drop and reinserted after 15 minutes, as the product contains a preservative that can be absorbed by soft lenses

Quick Tips

  • Use at the same time each evening for consistent pressure control
  • Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye or any surface, to avoid contamination
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drop
  • Tell your doctor about any change in eye colour, eyelash appearance, or eyelid skin darkening
  • Attend regular eye pressure check-ups, as glaucoma often has no early symptoms

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lumigan 0.01% Eye Drop used for?

Lumigan 0.01% Eye Drop is used to lower elevated pressure inside the eye in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, helping to protect the optic nerve from long-term damage.

Why does this eye drop sometimes darken the eyelashes or eyelid skin?

Bimatoprost can stimulate eyelash growth and, in some people, cause darkening of the eyelid skin or a gradual increase in brown pigment in the iris. These changes can occur with regular use and the iris colour change may be permanent – tell your doctor if you notice this.

Can I use this together with other glaucoma eye drops?

Yes, it can often be combined with other classes of glaucoma eye drops for additional pressure control, but combining it with another prostaglandin analogue is not usually recommended. Follow your doctor’s specific instructions on timing between different drops.

Can I wear contact lenses while using this eye drop?

Remove contact lenses before applying this eye drop, as it contains a preservative that can be absorbed by soft lenses, and wait about 15 minutes before reinserting them.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose – do not use two doses at once. Missing occasional doses can reduce pressure control, so try to stay consistent with your schedule.
