Overview

Muposten Ointment contains Mupirocin 2% and is presented as an ointment. It is supplied in a pack size of 15g.

It is classified as a non-prescription medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Wash and gently dry the affected area before use. Apply a thin layer of Muposten Ointment directly to the infected area of skin as instructed by your doctor, usually two to three times a day, and the area may be covered with a clean gauze dressing if advised. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands themselves are being treated, and complete the full course even if the skin appears to improve after a few days, to reduce the risk of the infection recurring or bacteria becoming resistant.

Dosage

The typical regimen is a thin application of Muposten Ointment to the affected skin two to three times daily for up to 10 days, though the exact frequency, area of application, and duration will be set by the prescribing doctor based on the type and severity of the infection. Do not use more ointment or for longer than prescribed, and seek medical review if the infection has not improved within 3 to 5 days.

Shelf Life

Muposten Ointment remains stable until the expiry date printed on the tube and outer packaging when stored correctly and unopened. Once opened, it should generally be used within the period recommended on the packaging or by your pharmacist, and any leftover ointment from a previous infection should not be reused for a new one without checking with a doctor or pharmacist.

Storage Instructions

Store Muposten Ointment at or below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and keep the tube tightly capped after each use. Do not store it in the bathroom where humidity is high, and keep it out of reach and sight of children at all times.

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation or redness at the application site
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Dryness or peeling of treated skin
  • Rash (less common)
  • Swelling or stinging (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any ingredient in the ointment base (particularly polyethylene glycol, in patients with significant kidney impairment)
  • Application to the eyes or inside the nose unless a specific nasal formulation has been prescribed for that purpose
  • Use on large areas of broken or severely damaged skin without medical supervision
  • Self-diagnosis of skin infections without a doctor’s assessment, since non-bacterial conditions will not respond to mupirocin

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other topical medicines applied to the same area, which may dilute or interfere with mupirocin’s local effect if not properly spaced
  • No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are typically expected with correctly dosed topical use, as absorption into the bloodstream is minimal
  • Avoid combining with other topical antibiotics on the same site unless specifically directed by your doctor
  • Inform your doctor of all other skin treatments, including traditional or herbal topical remedies, before starting Muposten Ointment

Quick Tips

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if the skin looks better after a few days
  • Keep the infected area clean and, if advised, covered with a fresh dressing
  • Avoid sharing towels, clothing, or bedding with others while the infection is active to prevent spread
  • Do not apply to the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose unless specifically instructed
  • Return to your doctor if the area worsens, spreads, or fails to improve within a few days of starting treatment

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Mupirocin 2% (active ingredient)
  • Polyethylene Glycol 400 (ointment base)
  • Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (ointment base)
  • Other pharmaceutical-grade ointment excipients as per manufacturer formulation

Relevant Information

Muposten Ointment is a prescription-only topical antibiotic in Malaysia, and a doctor’s assessment beforehand helps confirm the infection is genuinely bacterial and appropriate for mupirocin, rather than a fungal, viral, or non-infective skin condition that would not respond to this treatment; ongoing or recurrent infections may also need further evaluation for an underlying cause.
