Overview

Nordipine 5mg Tablet contains amlodipine 5mg, manufactured by Duopharma, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to prevent chest pain (angina), including angina caused by coronary artery spasm.

Amlodipine works by blocking calcium channels in the smooth muscle of blood vessel walls, preventing calcium from entering these cells. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart, which reduces the workload on the heart and helps prevent angina attacks.

How it Works

Amlodipine selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium influx into these cells. This causes the smooth muscle in artery walls to relax, widening the blood vessels (vasodilation), which lowers peripheral resistance and blood pressure while also improving blood flow to the heart muscle.

Directions for Use

Take Nordipine 5mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, and continue taking it regularly even if you feel well, since blood pressure control needs to be continuous.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Nordipine 5mg Tablet is 5mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to a maximum of 10mg once daily depending on your blood pressure or angina response. Your doctor will determine the right starting dose and any adjustments needed for your condition.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Simvastatin doses above 20mg daily should generally be avoided when combined with amlodipine, as amlodipine increases simvastatin blood levels and the risk of muscle-related side effects
  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) can significantly increase amlodipine levels and its blood-pressure-lowering effect
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may increase amlodipine blood levels and should be used with caution
  • Other blood pressure medicines may enhance amlodipine’s blood-pressure-lowering effect, increasing the risk of low blood pressure

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time each day to maintain steady blood pressure control
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly as advised by your doctor
  • Report new or worsening ankle swelling to your doctor, as the dose may need review
  • Avoid large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while on this medicine
  • Do not stop this medicine abruptly without medical advice, even if you feel well

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nordipine 5mg Tablet used for?

Nordipine 5mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent angina (chest pain), including angina caused by spasm of the coronary arteries. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

How long does it take for amlodipine to lower blood pressure?

Amlodipine begins working within a few hours, but its full blood-pressure-lowering effect is usually seen after about 1-2 weeks of regular daily use.

Why are my ankles swelling since starting this medicine?

Mild ankle or foot swelling (peripheral oedema) is a well-recognised, dose-related side effect of amlodipine caused by its effect on blood vessels. Mention it to your doctor, especially if it is bothersome or worsening, as a dose adjustment may help.

Can I stop taking this medicine if my blood pressure returns to normal?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and stopping amlodipine suddenly can allow your blood pressure to rise again.

Can I drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine?

It is best to limit or avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they can increase amlodipine blood levels and the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure and flushing.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Nordipine 5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
