Overview

Onglyza 2.5mg Tablet contains saxagliptin 2.5mg, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor used together with diet and exercise, alone or with other antidiabetic medicines such as metformin, to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Saxagliptin works by prolonging the action of the body’s own incretin hormones, which increases insulin release and lowers glucagon levels after meals in a glucose-dependent way, helping to lower blood sugar without a high risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.

How it Works

Saxagliptin inhibits the DPP-4 enzyme, which normally breaks down incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP shortly after they are released. By slowing this breakdown, saxagliptin increases active incretin levels, which in turn boosts glucose-dependent insulin secretion from the pancreas and reduces excess glucagon release, lowering blood sugar mainly after meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Onglyza 2.5mg Tablet used for?

Onglyza 2.5mg Tablet is used together with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Can this medicine cause low blood sugar on its own?

When used alone, saxagliptin has a low risk of causing hypoglycaemia because it only boosts insulin release when blood sugar is elevated. The risk increases when combined with a sulfonylurea or insulin.

Does this medicine treat type 1 diabetes?

No, saxagliptin is only indicated for type 2 diabetes and should not be used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What symptoms of heart failure should I watch for?

Tell your doctor promptly if you develop new or worsening shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or swelling of the legs, ankles, or feet, as saxagliptin has been associated with an increased risk of heart failure in some patients.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Onglyza 2.5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
