Overview

Onglyza 5mg Tablet contains saxagliptin 5mg, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines such as metformin.

Saxagliptin works by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme, which normally breaks down incretin hormones released after meals. By preserving these hormones, saxagliptin increases insulin release and reduces glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner, helping to lower blood sugar mainly after meals.

How it Works

Saxagliptin inhibits the DPP-4 enzyme, prolonging the activity of the incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin and suppress excess glucagon release when blood sugar is high, an effect that diminishes as blood sugar approaches normal, which keeps the risk of low blood sugar relatively low when used alone.

Directions for Use

Take Onglyza 5mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Continue regular blood sugar monitoring and medical check-ups as advised by your doctor, as this medicine works best alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

Dosage

The usual dose of Onglyza 5mg Tablet is 5mg once daily, taken with or without food. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of 2.5mg once daily if you have moderate to severe kidney impairment or are taking certain other medicines. Do not change your dose without consulting your doctor, and continue following the diet and exercise plan you have been given.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Onglyza 5mg Tablet used for?

Onglyza 5mg Tablet is used, alongside diet and exercise, to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or together with other diabetes medicines as prescribed by your doctor.

Can this medicine cause low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) on its own?

Does this medicine treat type 1 diabetes?

No, saxagliptin is only for type 2 diabetes and must not be used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What symptoms of pancreatitis should I watch for?

What should I do if I miss a dose of Onglyza 5mg Tablet?
