Overview

Ozempic 1.34mg/ml (0.25mg, 0.5mg/dose) Pre-filled Pen contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist administered by subcutaneous injection once weekly for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, to help improve blood glucose (sugar) control.

Semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, helping the pancreas release insulin appropriately, slowing digestion, and reducing appetite, which together help lower blood glucose levels.

How it Works

Semaglutide binds to and activates GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, brain, and gastrointestinal tract. This increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion, reduces glucagon secretion, and slows gastric emptying, while also acting on appetite centres in the brain. Its effects are glucose-dependent, meaning it stimulates insulin release mainly when blood glucose is high, which lowers the risk of hypoglycaemia when used without other glucose-lowering medicines that can themselves cause low blood glucose.

Directions for Use

Ozempic is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm, using a fresh needle for each injection and rotating the injection site each time. You must be trained by your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse on the correct injection technique before using the pen on your own; the injection day can be changed if needed as long as at least 2 days (48 hours) have passed since your last dose.

Dosage

Ozempic is injected once weekly, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Your doctor will start you on a low dose and adjust it over time based on your blood glucose control and tolerability – do not change your dose or injection frequency without your doctor’s advice, as the dose and any titration schedule are individualised for each patient under specialist or doctor supervision.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Before first use, store the pen in a refrigerator at 2-8°C. Do not freeze, and do not use the pen if it has been frozen. Once you have started using a pen, keep it away from direct heat and light and always replace the pen cap when not in use; ask your pharmacist how long an in-use pen may be kept and at what temperature, as this is stated in the product’s package insert. Do not use the pen beyond its labelled expiry date.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any ingredient in this product
  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis (not indicated for these conditions)
  • Pregnancy – discuss contraception and treatment planning with your doctor, as this medicine should generally be stopped well before a planned pregnancy

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other diabetes medicines that can cause low blood glucose (e.g. insulin, sulphonylureas) may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia when combined with semaglutide, and dose adjustment may be needed
  • By slowing gastric emptying, semaglutide may affect the absorption of some oral medicines taken at the same time
  • Warfarin’s effect may be altered due to changes in gastric emptying; closer INR monitoring may be advised if you take both
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines and supplements you are taking, as well as any other injectable diabetes medicines

Quick Tips

  • Use this medicine only under the supervision of your doctor, who will set and adjust your dose schedule
  • Inject on the same day each week to build a routine, and rotate injection sites
  • Expect some nausea when starting or increasing your dose – this often improves over time, and eating smaller, lower-fat meals can help
  • Seek urgent medical attention for severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Attend all follow-up appointments and blood tests your doctor schedules to monitor your response and blood glucose control
  • Never share your pen or needles with another person, even if the needle is changed

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ozempic 1.34mg/ml (0.25mg, 0.5mg/dose) Pre-filled Pen used for?

Ozempic 1.34mg/ml (0.25mg, 0.5mg/dose) Pre-filled Pen is used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, as part of an overall treatment plan supervised by your doctor.

Is Ozempic the same as insulin?

No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works differently from insulin – it helps your own pancreas release insulin appropriately when your blood glucose is high, rather than directly replacing insulin.

Can Ozempic cause weight loss?

Some people notice reduced appetite and a degree of weight change while using GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide, as part of how the medicine slows digestion and affects appetite. However, this product is prescribed for blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes; discuss any questions about weight management with your doctor rather than adjusting your dose for this purpose.

What should I do if I miss a weekly dose?

If it has been 5 days or less since your missed dose, take it as soon as possible. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regular scheduled day – do not double the dose. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Can I change the day of the week I inject?

Yes, the injection day can be changed if needed, as long as at least 2 days (48 hours) have passed since your last dose.

What if I feel very nauseated after injecting?

Mild nausea is common, especially when starting treatment or after a dose increase, and usually improves over time. Eating smaller, lower-fat meals can help. Contact your doctor if nausea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by severe abdominal pain.
