Overview

Prime Acriflavine Solution is a topical antiseptic solution manufactured by Prime Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian pharmaceutical company. It contains Acriflavine 0.1% as its active ingredient, an acridine-derivative antiseptic compound with a distinctive orange-yellow colour, formulated in an aqueous base together with stabilisers and preservatives. Acriflavine solutions of this type have a long history of use in wound care within Malaysian pharmacy practice and are recognisable by the yellow-orange tint they impart.

Prime Acriflavine Solution is an OTC product, available in Malaysia without a doctor’s prescription. It is supplied as a ready-to-use liquid antiseptic solution intended for external application to the skin, applied using a clean cotton swab or pad rather than poured directly or ingested. As with other topical antiseptic solutions, it is not intended for internal use or for use in the eyes.

Prime Acriflavine Solution is sold in Malaysia in a 30ml bottle, a compact size suited to keeping in a home first-aid kit for occasional topical use. One characteristic that distinguishes acriflavine-based antiseptics from many other topical antiseptics is the temporary yellow-orange staining they can leave on skin, fabric, and dressings.

Directions for Use

Clean the area of skin gently before applying Prime Acriflavine Solution. Using a clean cotton swab or pad, apply a thin layer of the solution to the affected area and allow it to dry naturally in the air. Avoid touching the treated area with unwashed hands afterwards, and do not cover it tightly immediately after application unless directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Use a fresh cotton swab or pad for each application to reduce the risk of contamination.

Dosage

Prime Acriflavine Solution is for topical use only, so a conventional oral “dose” does not apply. Apply to the affected area 1 to 3 times daily, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not apply more frequently than directed on the label. If the area you are treating does not show signs of improvement within a few days, or appears to worsen, stop self-treating and seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist rather than applying more solution or more often.

Shelf Life

Use Prime Acriflavine Solution before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer carton. Discard the solution if it develops an unusual smell, changes colour significantly beyond its normal orange-yellow tint, or shows any sign of contamination.

Storage Instructions

Store Prime Acriflavine Solution below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, as light exposure can affect the stability of the solution over time. Keep the bottle tightly capped when not in use and store it out of the reach and sight of children. Be careful when storing the bottle near light-coloured fabrics or surfaces, as any spillage can leave a stain.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild skin irritation or redness at the site of application.
  • Common: A temporary burning or stinging sensation immediately after application.
  • Common: Yellow-orange staining of the skin, which fades over time but is not a sign of harm.
  • Serious: Rare allergic reactions such as a spreading rash, blistering, or significant itching, which need prompt medical attention if they occur.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to acriflavine or any other ingredient in Prime Acriflavine Solution.
  • Use in or around the eyes, or on mucous membranes.
  • Application to large, deep, or heavily infected wounds without prior assessment by a doctor or pharmacist.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Prime Acriflavine Solution is for external use only, so oral drug or food interactions are not applicable.
  • Avoid applying other topical antiseptics or medicated dressings to the same area at the same time without checking with a doctor or pharmacist, as combining products may increase skin irritation.
  • Test on a small area of skin first if you have not used acriflavine-based products before and have a history of sensitive skin.

Quick Tips

  • Apply a thin layer only; a thicker layer does not work any faster and increases staining.
  • Let the solution dry naturally in the air rather than wiping or blowing on it.
  • Use a fresh cotton swab or pad for each application.
  • Be mindful of clothing and bedding, as the solution can stain fabric.
  • Keep the bottle tightly capped and away from light to preserve the solution.
  • Seek medical advice if a wound looks infected, is very deep, or does not improve within a few days.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Apply Prime Acriflavine Solution to a small area of skin first if you have not used it before, to check for any sensitivity. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and be mindful that the solution can stain skin, clothing, and bedding. Use a clean, fresh cotton swab or pad for each application to reduce the risk of contamination.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using Prime Acriflavine Solution and seek medical advice if you develop a spreading rash, blistering, significant itching, or any other sign of an allergic reaction. See a doctor or pharmacist if the area being treated appears infected, does not improve within a few days, or looks worse despite regular use.
