Pritamol 250mg Suppository

Pritamol 250mg Suppository is a paracetamol-based rectal suppository from the Pritamol brand, offering an alternative route of administration to oral paracetamol formulations for children who are unable to take medicine by mouth. Each suppository is formulated to contain 250mg of paracetamol (acetaminophen) as its active ingredient, moulded into a solid suppository base designed to melt at body temperature after insertion.

The Pritamol suppository range is available in more than one strength to suit different paediatric weight bands, with 250mg being one of the strengths offered alongside a lower 125mg suppository for smaller children; the same Pritamol brand also produces a separate 500mg tablet intended for adults and older children. Because the strengths and dosage forms within this single brand differ so much, it is important to check the exact strength and product name printed on the box before use.

This suppository is sold in Malaysia through DoctorOnCall in a strip pack, commonly supplied as 5s, and is distributed as part of DoctorOnCall’s over-the-counter paediatric self-care range. Always confirm the strength and weight-based dosing guidance against the current product packaging, package insert, or the advice of a doctor or pharmacist before administering it to a child.

This suppository is for rectal use only and must not be taken by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting the suppository.

If the suppository feels too soft to insert, briefly cool it — still in its wrapper — under cold running water or in the refrigerator for a few minutes before removing the wrapper. Insert the suppository gently into the rectum, pointed end first, using a fingertip, and try to keep the child lying still for a few minutes afterward to help it stay in place.

Do not cut or split the suppository to adjust the dose. If a full suppository is too high a dose for the child’s weight, a lower-strength suppository, such as the 125mg strength, should be used instead — follow the advice of a doctor or pharmacist on the correct strength for the child’s weight.

Paracetamol suppositories for children are dosed according to body weight rather than age alone. As a general guide for paracetamol rectal formulations, a typical dose is approximately 10 to 15mg of paracetamol per kilogram of body weight, given as needed and spaced at least 4 to 6 hours apart, without exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours.

The 250mg strength is generally intended for children within the higher end of the paediatric weight range covered by the Pritamol suppository line, while the lower 125mg strength is intended for lighter or younger children. Do not give more than the maximum amount stated on the packaging within 24 hours, and do not use alongside any other paracetamol-containing product, including oral syrups or tablets, without medical advice.

Do not use any suppository beyond this date, and check each individual suppository for softening, melting, or damage to its shape before use, as suppositories are sensitive to heat.

Store below 25°C, or as stated on the packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. In hot or humid conditions the suppository may soften; if this happens, it can be cooled briefly in its wrapper before use.

Keep the strip in its original packaging until ready to use, and store out of reach and sight of children at all times.

• Uncommon: Nausea or stomach discomfort.
• Rare: Skin reactions such as rash or itching.
• Serious: Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing — seek emergency medical care immediately.
• Serious: Signs of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual tiredness, particularly if an overdose is suspected — seek urgent medical attention.

• Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or to any component of the suppository base.
• Severe liver impairment or active severe liver disease.
• Recent rectal surgery, rectal bleeding, or active inflammation of the rectum, unless a doctor has confirmed the suppository is appropriate.
• Should not be used together with any other paracetamol-containing product, whether oral or rectal.

• No specific food interactions are relevant, as this product is administered rectally rather than taken by mouth.
• Concurrent use of other paracetamol-containing medicines, such as syrups, tablets, or other suppositories, increases the risk of exceeding the maximum safe daily amount; check all other medicines a child is taking before use.
• Certain anti-epileptic medicines used in children may affect how the body processes paracetamol; inform the treating doctor if the child is on any regular medication before using this product.

• Keep suppositories in the refrigerator if the room is very warm, since they can soften quickly in hot, humid conditions.
• Wash your hands before and after each insertion, and use a clean fingertip or a small amount of water to ease insertion.
• Check the strength printed on each individual suppository wrapper before use, especially if more than one Pritamol strength is kept at home.
• Keep a simple log of the time of each dose given so that doses can be spaced correctly.
• Store the strip flat in its original box to help the suppositories keep their shape.
• Keep this product well out of reach and sight of children, as it can resemble other small packaged items.

Precautions: This product should be given to children only under a caregiver’s close supervision, with the correct strength and dosing interval confirmed against the packaging or the advice of a doctor or pharmacist, since dosing is based on the child’s body weight. It should not be used in a child with recent rectal surgery, rectal bleeding, or existing rectal irritation without medical confirmation.
