Overview

Ravimed 5mg Tablet contains medroxyprogesterone acetate 5mg, a synthetic progestin used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding and secondary amenorrhoea (absence of periods due to hormonal imbalance), and as the progestin component of certain hormone therapy regimens.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate works by binding to progesterone receptors in the lining of the womb (endometrium), converting it from a proliferative to a secretory state and helping to regulate and stabilise the menstrual cycle. As part of hormone therapy, it also opposes the effect of oestrogen on the endometrium.

How it Works

Medroxyprogesterone acetate binds to progesterone receptors in the endometrium, transforming it from a growth (proliferative) phase into a secretory phase, and suppresses the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland, reducing further hormonal stimulation of the endometrium.

Directions for Use

Take Ravimed 5mg Tablet at the same time each day for the number of days prescribed by your doctor, with or without food. Do not skip doses within a course, as this can lead to irregular breakthrough bleeding.

Dosage

Ravimed 5mg Tablet is usually prescribed as a course of daily tablets over a set number of days each cycle, as individualised by your doctor depending on the condition being treated. Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if bleeding stops earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ravimed 5mg Tablet used for?

Ravimed 5mg Tablet is used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding, secondary amenorrhoea, and as part of some hormone therapy regimens to protect the womb lining.

How long will it take for my bleeding pattern to improve?

This varies by individual and the condition being treated – your doctor will advise on the expected timeframe and when to expect a withdrawal bleed after completing a course.

Can I take this medicine if I am pregnant?

No, medroxyprogesterone is not used in pregnancy. Tell your doctor immediately if you think you may be pregnant, and use reliable contraception while being treated unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

Will this medicine affect my ability to have children in the future?

Short courses of medroxyprogesterone for abnormal bleeding or amenorrhoea are not intended as contraception and do not typically have a lasting effect on future fertility, but discuss your specific fertility questions with your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ravimed 5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your course. Do not double the dose, and tell your doctor if you miss doses often, as this can disrupt your bleeding pattern.
