Overview

Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion contains ciclosporin 0.05%, an ophthalmic emulsion used to treat chronic dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in patients whose tear production is thought to be suppressed by ocular surface inflammation. It is used long-term to increase your eyes’ own tear production, rather than simply lubricating the eye.

Ciclosporin is a calcineurin inhibitor that works locally on the surface of the eye to reduce the low-grade inflammation that is thought to suppress the tear-producing lacrimal glands. Over time, this allows the glands to increase natural tear production.

How it Works

Ciclosporin inhibits calcineurin, an enzyme involved in activating T-lymphocytes that drive chronic low-grade inflammation on the ocular surface and around the lacrimal glands. By dampening this local immune activity, ciclosporin is thought to help restore the lacrimal glands’ ability to produce tears over several weeks to months of regular use.

Directions for Use

Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion is supplied in single-use vials – use the entire contents of one vial to treat both affected eyes immediately after opening, then discard the vial with any remaining emulsion; do not reuse it. Invert the vial gently a few times before use to mix the emulsion evenly. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Dosage

The usual dose of Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion is one drop instilled into each affected eye twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. Your doctor will confirm the dosing schedule and how long you should continue treatment, as visible improvement in tear production can take several weeks to become noticeable.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to ciclosporin or any ingredient in this emulsion
  • Active or suspected ocular infection, which should be treated before starting this medicine

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are expected with normal ophthalmic use, as very little ciclosporin is absorbed into the bloodstream
  • If using other eye drops, space them at least 15 minutes apart from this product to avoid one washing out the other
  • Contact lenses should be removed before use, as the emulsion may affect the lens or reduce its own effect if instilled with lenses in place

Quick Tips

  • Remove contact lenses before each dose and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in
  • Use the entire vial for both eyes at each dose, then discard it – never save or reuse an opened vial
  • Continue using this medicine consistently even if you do not notice immediate improvement, as benefit builds up over weeks to months
  • Avoid touching the vial tip to your eye, eyelid, or any surface to reduce contamination risk
  • Do not stop this medicine without consulting your doctor, even if your symptoms improve

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion used for?

Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion is used to treat chronic dry eye disease when tear production is thought to be reduced due to inflammation of the eye’s surface.

How long does it take to see improvement in my dry eye symptoms?

It can take several weeks to a few months of regular twice-daily use before you notice increased tear production or symptom improvement, so it is important to continue using it consistently as prescribed.

Can I use artificial tears together with this medicine?

Yes, your doctor may recommend continuing preservative-free artificial tears alongside this medicine, especially in the early weeks. If using both, space them a few minutes apart.

Can I wear contact lenses while using this medicine?

What should I do if I miss a dose of Restasis 0.05% Eye Emulsion?

Simply continue with your next scheduled dose – do not instil an extra drop to make up for a missed one. If you have concerns about consistently missed doses, speak to your doctor.
