Overview

Smith & Nephew Elastic Cohesive Bandage 1s is a self-adhering elastic bandage supplied as a single roll. It is made from a blend of elastic fabric and a cohesive material, and the product is described as latex-free and designed for flexibility and safe skin contact. The cohesive coating is what makes the bandage cling to itself, so no clips or pins are needed to keep the wrap in place.

A key feature of a cohesive bandage is that it sticks only to itself and not to skin, hair or clothing, which makes it easier to apply and remove than a traditional adhesive wrap. The elastic fabric stretches as it is wound around a limb and then recovers, holding the layers firmly together. Smith & Nephew is a long-established medical products brand, and this bandage is made in a flexible, conforming format that follows the shape of the body part.

This is a medical device, not a medicine, and it is not impregnated with any active ingredient. It is supplied as a pack of one, and exact length and width can vary between listings, so please check the product page and the printed label for the size you are ordering. It is supplied clean but is not sterile unless the label says so.

Directions for Use

Wash and dry your hands and the area to be wrapped. Start wrapping from the point furthest from the heart, such as the toes or fingers, and work upwards, holding the roll so the loose end is against the skin. Wrap with a light to moderate stretch, overlapping each turn by about half the width of the bandage.

Press the end of the bandage firmly onto the layer beneath it so that it clings in place; no clip or tape is needed. The bandage should feel snug but never tight. Check the fingers or toes soon after wrapping and again regularly; if they become numb, tingly, cold, pale, blue or more swollen, unwrap and rewrap more loosely. Do not wear a tightly wrapped bandage overnight.

Dosage

Not applicable. This is a medical device, not a medicine, so there is no dose, frequency or maximum daily amount.

Do not stretch the bandage fully as you wrap, as this makes it too tight, and do not wear it for longer than a healthcare professional advises. Remove and reapply if it becomes loose, wet or soiled. If you are unsure how long or how tightly to use it, check with a doctor, pharmacist or nurse.

Storage Instructions

Store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture and dust. Keep the bandage in its original packaging until needed, as dirt, hair or moisture on the cohesive surface can reduce how well it clings.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild skin irritation, redness or pressure marks where the bandage has been wrapped, particularly if applied too tightly or worn for long periods.
  • Common: A feeling of warmth or tightness at the wrapped area, especially in hot and humid weather.
  • Serious: Numbness, tingling, coldness, blue or pale skin, or increasing swelling or pain below the bandage. Remove or loosen the bandage immediately and seek medical help, because these can signal restricted blood flow.
  • Serious: Signs of allergic skin reaction such as spreading rash, blistering or swelling at the contact area. Stop use and seek medical advice.

Contraindications

  • Do not apply tightly to a limb that already has poor circulation, loss of feeling, or a condition affecting blood flow, unless a healthcare professional has advised it.
  • Do not wrap over an open wound or infected skin without an appropriate sterile dressing underneath.
  • Do not use if you have a known skin reaction to the bandage materials, or if the bandage is damaged, wet or soiled.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Not applicable. This is a medical device, not a medicine, and no drug or food interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Wrap from the point furthest from the heart towards the body, with even, half-overlapping turns.
  • Use a light to moderate stretch, as a fully stretched bandage will be too tight.
  • Check the colour and feeling of the fingers or toes after wrapping, and rewrap more loosely if needed.
  • Press the end firmly onto the layer below so that it clings securely without clips or tape.
  • Keep the cohesive surface free of dirt, oils and hair, as these reduce how well it clings.
  • Do not leave a tight bandage on overnight, and replace the bandage if it becomes soiled or stops clinging.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Made from a blend of elastic fabric and cohesive material (latex-free), designed for flexibility and safe skin contact.

Relevant Information

Precautions: This is a medical device, not a medicine. Wrap with a light to moderate stretch and never so tightly that circulation is restricted. Check the fingers or toes regularly for numbness, tingling, coldness or colour change. Do not wear a tight bandage overnight. Do not use over open wounds without a suitable dressing, and take care with people who have poor circulation, diabetes or reduced sensation. Stop use if skin irritation develops.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if the wrapped area becomes numb, tingly, cold, pale, blue, increasingly swollen or painful, if skin irritation or a rash develops, or if you are unsure how to wrap the bandage correctly. Seek urgent medical help immediately if you suspect circulation has been cut off, or if there is severe pain, deformity or inability to move a limb.
