Smith & Nephew Heavy Crepe Bandage (10cmx4.5m) is a woven cotton and elastic bandage with a denser, heavier weave than a standard medium crepe bandage, giving it a firmer level of compression. It is a medical device rather than a medicine.

At 10cm wide and 4.5m long when unstretched, the heavy crepe bandage is generally sized for larger areas such as the knee, ankle, calf, or thigh. It is a reusable, washable bandage rather than a single-use sterile item, and, unless the specific pack states otherwise, should be treated as non-sterile.

Like other crepe bandages, the heavy weight version derives its elasticity from cotton woven together with elasticated thread, but with a denser, thicker construction that produces a stronger recoil force. When wrapped with light, even tension, this stronger recoil delivers a firmer level of compression than a standard medium crepe bandage.

Because the level of compression still depends on how the bandage is applied rather than on the fabric alone, the same wrapping principles apply — even overlapping turns from below upward distribute pressure evenly, whereas uneven or excessively tight wrapping can concentrate pressure and restrict blood flow, and this risk is somewhat greater with a heavier, higher-recoil bandage if over-tensioned.

Start wrapping below the area being supported (for example, at the base of the toes when bandaging an ankle or calf) and work upward in overlapping spiral turns, each covering about half of the previous turn, using even and moderate tension throughout — the heavier weave means it is easy to apply more compression than intended, so avoid pulling the bandage excessively taut. Secure the end with the fastening clip or tape provided, avoiding knots directly over a bony area or fresh injury.

After applying, check that toes or fingers below the wrap remain a normal colour, are not unusually cold, numb, or tingling, and can still move — re-wrap more loosely if any of these occur. Remove or loosen the bandage at night unless advised otherwise, and re-apply in the morning if continued support is needed.

Store in a clean, dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, sharp objects, and moisture. If washed for reuse, follow the care instructions on the packaging, allow it to air dry fully, and re-roll it neatly before storing, as prolonged dampness can affect the elastic threads over time.
