Smith & Nephew Jelonet (10cmx10cm)

Smith & Nephew Jelonet (10cmx10cm) is the larger size in the same sterile, paraffin-impregnated gauze dressing line as the smaller Jelonet piece. The knitted cotton or viscose gauze is uniformly impregnated with soft paraffin, giving it a non-adherent quality. It is a medical device rather than a medicine and contains no active pharmaceutical ingredient.

The 10cmx10cm size is the larger option in the Jelonet range, offering more surface area than the 5cmx5cm piece. As with all Jelonet sizes, it is used together with a secondary absorbent dressing, and is supplied as an individually wrapped, sterile, single-use item.

The mechanism is the same physical, non-adherent action found across the Jelonet range: soft paraffin coats the knitted gauze mesh, filling the openings with an inert, lubricating layer that sits between the fabric fibres and the surface it contacts, preventing the fibres from bonding to the surface.

For a larger piece, this same construction extends across a wider surface area. As with the smaller size, the paraffin does not absorb fluid itself, so fluid passes through the open mesh into a secondary absorbent dressing placed on top.

Because the 10cmx10cm size is generally used on larger burns, extensive abrasions, or bigger ulcer and skin graft/donor sites, application should usually be under the guidance of a doctor or nurse rather than as pure self-treatment. If use has been advised for a wound of this size, wash and dry your hands, clean the wound as directed, then open the sterile pack and lay the paraffin gauze directly over the wound so the mesh fully covers the area, trimming to shape with clean scissors if necessary before opening the sterile field, not after.

Cover with a suitable secondary absorbent dressing sized to manage the larger volume of exudate a bigger wound may produce, and secure with tape or a bandage. Change the dressing according to your healthcare provider’s schedule or when the secondary dressing becomes saturated, removing it gently to avoid disturbing new tissue.
