Overview

Sobenz Lozenge (Orange) is an orange-flavoured throat lozenge designed to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Each lozenge contains two active ingredients: benzydamine hydrochloride 3 mg and cetylpyridinium chloride 1.33 mg. It is supplied in blister strips, with pack sizes such as 8 and 16 lozenges as shown in the variation options on this page.

Benzydamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compound that is absorbed through the lining of the mouth and has local anaesthetic properties, while cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic that acts directly on microbes in the mouth and throat. Together they make up a combination lozenge that works locally and is not intended to be swallowed whole or chewed. The orange flavouring makes the lozenge more pleasant to take for adults and older children.

Sobenz Lozenge (Orange) is an over-the-counter product sold through DoctorOnCall as an online pharmacy serving customers in Malaysia and Singapore. Please check the label of the pack you receive for the full list of inactive ingredients and for the dosing instructions on the leaflet. Our pharmacist team can answer your questions about suitability and safety before you order.

Directions for Use

Remove one lozenge from the blister strip with clean, dry hands and place it in your mouth. Allow it to dissolve slowly and completely, moving it gently around the mouth so that it reaches all areas of the mouth and throat. Do not chew the lozenge or swallow it whole.

Adults and children aged 6 years and above may take one lozenge every 1 to 2 hours as needed, not exceeding 12 lozenges in 24 hours, or as directed on the pack leaflet. Children should be supervised by an adult while using lozenges, because of the risk of choking.

Avoid eating or drinking immediately after the lozenge has dissolved so that the active ingredients remain in contact with the mouth and throat for longer. Do not use the lozenge for longer than the period stated on the leaflet without speaking to a doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

For adults and children aged 6 years and above, dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth every 1 to 2 hours as needed. Do not take more than 12 lozenges in 24 hours, and do not exceed the dose stated on the pack leaflet if it differs from this guidance.

Not recommended for children under 6 years of age. If a dose is missed, simply take the next lozenge when needed; do not take extra lozenges to make up for a missed dose. See a doctor if the throat discomfort lasts more than a few days or is accompanied by high fever, rash or difficulty swallowing.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the blister strip and outer carton. Keep lozenges in their blister until you are ready to use them, and do not use a lozenge from a damaged or opened blister.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep the lozenges in their original packaging and out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Mouth or throat irritation
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash (for topical formulations)
  • Allergic reactions (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to benzydamine, cetylpyridinium chloride or any other ingredient in the lozenge.
  • Children under 6 years of age, because of the risk of choking and lack of dosing information.
  • People who have had breathing problems after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs should not use the lozenges unless advised by a doctor.
  • Do not use in the presence of severe mouth ulceration, open sores or injuries in the mouth or throat unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Aspirin and other NSAIDs: although benzydamine is absorbed only in small amounts, people who are sensitive to NSAIDs should seek advice before using the lozenges.
  • Other antiseptic mouthwashes, throat sprays or lozenges: avoid using several at the same time, as this can irritate the lining of the mouth.
  • Anionic ingredients found in some toothpastes, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, can reduce the activity of cetylpyridinium chloride; allow some time between brushing teeth and taking a lozenge.
  • Food and drink: avoid eating or drinking immediately after taking the lozenge so that it can stay in contact with the mouth and throat.

Quick Tips

  • Let the lozenge dissolve slowly in the mouth without chewing it or moving it too quickly, so it stays in contact with the throat for longer.
  • Wait a short while before eating or drinking after the lozenge has dissolved.
  • Keep the lozenges in their blister packs until needed, and keep them away from heat and humidity.
  • Supervise children closely and do not give lozenges to children under 6 years of age, because of the choking risk.
  • Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and rest your voice while you have a sore throat.
  • Do not use the lozenges beyond the period stated on the leaflet; if symptoms continue, see a doctor or pharmacist.

Can children use Sobenz Lozenge (Orange)?

Children aged 6 years and above may use the lozenges under adult supervision, following the dosage on the pack leaflet. The lozenges are not recommended for children under 6 years because of the risk of choking, and children should never be given a lozenge while lying down or while running.

How should I store Sobenz Lozenge (Orange)?
