Overview

Stocrin 600mg Tablet contains efavirenz 600mg, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children. It must always be used together with other antiretroviral medicines, never on its own, and treatment is managed by an HIV specialist.

Efavirenz works by binding directly to and blocking HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme the virus needs to convert its RNA into DNA inside human cells. By blocking this step, efavirenz prevents the virus from replicating and reduces the amount of virus in the blood.

How it Works

Efavirenz binds directly to HIV reverse transcriptase at a site distinct from where nucleoside analogues act, blocking the enzyme’s activity non-competitively. This prevents the virus from converting its RNA genome into DNA, stopping it from integrating into and replicating within human host cells.

Directions for Use

Take on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime, as this may reduce central nervous system side effects such as dizziness and vivid dreams, and taking it with a high-fat meal can increase drug absorption to levels associated with more side effects. Take it at the same time every day and never stop or skip doses without consulting your HIV care team, as inconsistent dosing can lead to drug resistance.

Dosage

Efavirenz is prescribed and monitored by an HIV specialist as part of an individualised combination regimen. The dose and combination partners must never be adjusted without your specialist’s guidance, as HIV treatment requires very high, consistent adherence to avoid the virus developing resistance.

Shelf Life

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other antiretrovirals – efavirenz is always used in combination, and your specialist selects partner drugs carefully to avoid harmful interactions

  • St John’s Wort and certain herbal supplements – can significantly reduce efavirenz levels and risk treatment failure
  • Always inform your HIV specialist of every medicine, supplement, or herbal product you take, as many interactions with efavirenz are clinically significant

Quick Tips

  • Take your regimen exactly as prescribed, every day, at the same time, to prevent the virus from developing resistance
  • Take on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime, to reduce central nervous system side effects
  • Never stop or change your antiretroviral regimen without speaking to your HIV specialist first

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Stocrin used for?

It is an antiretroviral medicine used as part of a combination regimen to treat HIV-1 infection, always alongside other antiretroviral medicines and under specialist supervision.

How does this medicine work?

It blocks HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme the virus needs to convert its RNA into DNA, preventing the virus from replicating.

Can I take this medicine on its own?

No, efavirenz must always be combined with other antiretroviral medicines as part of a regimen prescribed by your HIV specialist – it is never used alone.

Why is bedtime dosing on an empty stomach recommended?

Taking it at bedtime on an empty stomach can reduce central nervous system side effects like dizziness and vivid dreams, and avoids increased absorption that can occur with a high-fat meal.

What are the common side effects?

Dizziness, drowsiness, vivid dreams, and skin rash are commonly reported, especially in the first few weeks of treatment.

Can this medicine be taken during pregnancy?

It is not generally recommended during pregnancy unless your HIV specialist specifically advises it, due to a small increased risk of certain birth defects – discuss this with your care team.

What happens if I miss doses of my HIV regimen?

Missing or inconsistently taking doses can allow the virus to develop resistance to treatment – take your regimen exactly as prescribed and contact your HIV care team if you miss doses.
