Overview

Tagrisso 80mg Tablet contains osimertinib, a targeted oral cancer medicine (a third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor) used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumour carries specific EGFR gene mutations, as confirmed by a laboratory biomarker test before treatment starts.

It works by blocking the mutated EGFR protein that drives uncontrolled growth in these lung cancer cells, including the T790M resistance mutation that can develop after earlier EGFR-targeted treatment, which slows or stops tumour growth.

How it Works

Tagrisso selectively and irreversibly binds to mutated forms of the EGFR protein on cancer cells, blocking the signal that tells these cells to keep growing and dividing, while having comparatively less effect on normal EGFR in healthy tissue.

Directions for Use

Take the tablet at about the same time each day, with or without food, and swallow it whole; if swallowing whole is difficult, ask your oncology team how it may be dispersed, rather than crushing or chewing it yourself.

Dosage

The usual dose is one tablet once daily, but the exact dose, duration, and any interruption or reduction is individualised and monitored by the treating oncologist based on response and side effects.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Diarrhoea
  • Rash or dry skin
  • Nail changes
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Decreased appetite
  • Shortness of breath

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to osimertinib or any ingredient in the tablet
  • Use in pregnancy without specialist guidance, due to potential harm to the foetus

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Strong inducers of the CYP3A4 enzyme (such as rifampicin, carbamazepine, and St John’s Wort) can lower osimertinib levels and are generally avoided.
  • Osimertinib can affect the levels of some other medicines that depend on certain transporter proteins – your oncology team will review your full medicine list.
  • Medicines that prolong the QT interval should be used cautiously alongside osimertinib.
  • Inform your oncology team of all medicines and supplements you are taking.

Quick Tips

  • Contact your oncology team immediately if you develop new or worsening breathlessness, cough, or fever, as these can signal a rare but serious lung side effect.
  • Attend all scheduled heart (ECG) and blood monitoring appointments during treatment.
  • Use gentle skin and nail care, and tell your care team if rash or nail problems become uncomfortable.
  • Never stop or change the dose on your own – discuss any side effects with your oncology team first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tagrisso 80mg used for?

It is a targeted oral cancer medicine used to treat non-small cell lung cancer with specific EGFR gene mutations, confirmed by a biomarker test.

How is it different from regular chemotherapy?

It specifically targets cancer cells carrying the mutated EGFR protein rather than broadly attacking all rapidly dividing cells, and is taken as a tablet rather than an infusion.

Do I need a special test before starting this medicine?

Yes, your tumour tissue or blood is tested for EGFR mutations to confirm this medicine is appropriate for your cancer.

What lung-related symptoms should prompt me to call my doctor right away?

New or worsening breathlessness, cough, or fever should be reported immediately, as these can signal a rare but serious inflammatory lung condition.

Can I take this with food?

Yes, it can be taken with or without food, at about the same time each day.

Will I need regular heart monitoring?

Yes, osimertinib can affect heart rhythm (QT interval) in some patients, so your oncology team will monitor this with periodic ECGs.

Dry skin, rash, and nail changes are common; gentle skin care and prompt reporting of discomfort to your care team can help manage these.
