Overview

Tritace 10mg Tablet contains ramipril 10mg, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic heart failure, and to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in people at high risk of cardiovascular events. It is also used to protect kidney function in certain types of kidney disease.

Ramipril works by blocking the enzyme that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a hormone that normally narrows blood vessels and encourages the body to retain sodium and water. By reducing angiotensin II levels, ramipril allows blood vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure and reducing the workload on the heart.

How it Works

Ramipril is a prodrug that is converted in the liver to its active form, ramiprilat, which inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). This reduces the formation of angiotensin II and also slows the breakdown of bradykinin, a substance that further promotes blood vessel widening. Together, these effects lower blood pressure and reduce cardiac workload.

Directions for Use

Take Tritace 10mg Tablet at about the same time every day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Your doctor may start you on a low first dose and monitor your blood pressure closely, as some people experience a marked drop in blood pressure after the first dose. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Tritace 10mg Tablet for hypertension is 2.5mg once daily, which your doctor may gradually increase up to a maximum of 10mg daily based on your blood pressure response. For heart failure or cardiovascular risk reduction, dosing typically starts lower and is titrated more cautiously. Always take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tritace 10mg Tablet used for?

Tritace 10mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high cardiovascular risk. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why do I have a dry cough since starting this medicine?

A persistent dry, tickly cough is a well-known side effect of ACE inhibitors like ramipril, thought to be related to increased bradykinin levels. If the cough is bothersome, speak to your doctor, who may consider an alternative medicine such as an ARB.

Why did my doctor start me on a very low dose?

Some people experience a significant drop in blood pressure after their first dose of ramipril, especially if they are also taking diuretics or are dehydrated. Starting low and increasing gradually helps reduce this risk.

Can I take ramipril if I am pregnant or planning pregnancy?

Ramipril should not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the developing baby. Speak to your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Tritace 10mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
