Side Effects

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Slower heart rate
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath in some cases

Contraindications

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Verapamil or diltiazem: combining with atenolol can cause severe bradycardia or heart block.
  • Other blood pressure medicines: may cause an additive drop in blood pressure.
  • Insulin or other diabetes medicines: atenolol can mask the warning signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat.
  • Clonidine: stopping clonidine while taking a beta-blocker can cause a dangerous rebound rise in blood pressure.
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal products.

Quick Tips

  • Never stop this medicine suddenly, as this can trigger chest pain or a heart attack – your doctor will reduce the dose gradually if it needs to be stopped.
  • Monitor your pulse as advised by your doctor and report a heart rate that feels unusually slow.
  • If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar closely, as atenolol can mask typical low-blood-sugar warning signs.
