Voltaren 1% Emulgel

Voltaren 1% Emulgel is a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) gel containing Diclofenac Diethylamine at a strength equivalent to approximately 1.16% diclofenac diethylamine (standard 1% diclofenac strength), used for the local relief of pain and inflammation associated with minor muscle and joint conditions. It is commonly used for sprains, strains, backache, and localised osteoarthritis-related joint pain, applied directly to the skin over the affected area.

As a non-prescription product widely available in Malaysia, Voltaren 1% Emulgel offers a targeted alternative to oral pain relievers for people who prefer to treat a specific area without the systemic exposure of oral NSAIDs. While it is available without a prescription, a pharmacist should be consulted for guidance on correct use, especially for prolonged pain, if pregnant, or if taking other medicines, to ensure it is used safely and appropriately.

Diclofenac diethylamine works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes locally in the skin and underlying tissue, reducing the production of prostaglandins that contribute to pain, inflammation, and swelling at the site of application. Because it is applied topically at a standard 1% strength, it delivers a more localised effect with comparatively lower systemic absorption than oral diclofenac, while still providing effective relief for minor musculoskeletal aches and pains.

Voltaren 1% Emulgel should be applied to clean, dry, unbroken skin over the painful or inflamed area, gently massaging a small amount into the skin until absorbed. Hands should be washed after application (unless the hands are the area being treated), and the gel should not be applied to open wounds, broken skin, the eyes, or mucous membranes.

For adults and adolescents 14 years and above, the gel is generally applied 3 to 4 times daily to the affected area, using an amount appropriate to the size of the painful area, based on standard product labelling. If symptoms do not improve within about 7 days, or worsen, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted rather than continuing self-treatment indefinitely.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep the tube tightly closed after each use. Keep out of reach and sight of children, and discard the gel if it is past its expiry date or shows any change in colour or consistency.

• Do not use on children under 14 years without medical advice.
• Store the tube tightly closed below 30°C, and discard it if the gel’s colour or texture changes.
