Overview

Winwa Calazite Lotion is a water-based, pink lotion with a light floral aroma, made by Winwa Medical Sdn Bhd. According to the product information, it contains calamine at 15% w/v and zinc oxide at 5% w/v as the active ingredients. It is a topical lotion for external use on the skin, offered over the counter, and is commonly supplied in 60 ml and 120 ml bottles.

Calamine is a pink powder made of zinc oxide with a small amount of ferric oxide, and it is suspended in the lotion together with extra zinc oxide. Because the powders are suspended rather than dissolved, the lotion naturally settles and separates when it stands in the bottle, which is why it should always be shaken well before use. After the lotion is applied, the water evaporates and leaves a thin, light, powdery layer on the skin.

The lotion is lighter and less sticky than heavy creams and greasy ointments, and it tends to dry on the skin within a few minutes. As with any topical product, it should be used on the skin surface only and kept away from the eyes and mouth. Our pharmacist team can advise if you are unsure whether the lotion is suitable alongside other skin products, or for use on children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle very well before each use, as the powders settle at the bottom when the lotion stands.

Wash your hands and make sure the area of skin is clean and dry before application.

Pour a small amount onto a clean cotton wool pad or ball, or onto clean fingertips.

Dab or smooth the lotion gently over the area of skin, applying a thin, even layer without rubbing hard.

Allow the lotion to dry on the skin before dressing or covering the area.

For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes; if it gets into the eyes, rinse well with clean water. Wash your hands after use and close the bottle tightly.

Dosage

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area up to 3 to 4 times a day, or as directed on the product label or by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use more often than directed, as more lotion does not make it work better and can cause skin dryness.

If you miss an application, simply apply it at the next convenient time and do not double up. Stop using the lotion and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if your skin does not improve after about 7 days of use, or if it gets worse.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 30 °C, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap tightly closed and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Mild skin redness
  • Dryness at the application site
  • Brief stinging or burning sensation
  • Skin rash (rare)

Contraindications

  • Do not use on severe sunburn, extensive burns or severe blisters.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to calamine, zinc oxide or any other ingredient in the lotion.
  • Do not apply to the eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, or to skin that shows signs of infection, without medical advice.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No well-documented interactions are known for external use of calamine and zinc oxide lotion at normal amounts.
  • If you use other medicated skin products on the same area, such as steroid creams or antifungal creams, ask a pharmacist about the order and timing of using them together.
  • Do not cover the lotion with an airtight dressing unless a doctor or pharmacist has advised it.
  • No food interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle very well every time, because the calamine and zinc oxide settle quickly.
  • Apply with clean cotton wool or clean fingertips to avoid contaminating the bottle.
  • Use a thin layer and let it dry before getting dressed, to limit marks on clothing.
  • Keep the lotion away from your eyes, and wash your hands after applying it.
  • Store the bottle upright with the cap on tightly, in a cool place away from sunlight.
  • Do not scratch the area, as this can damage the skin and the lotion layer.
